Default Advice Please!!

Hi Everyone,

Firstly I am new to this site, so apologies if I have not posted this thread in the correct place.

I am also a recent Impreza owner and looking for some advice on some issues that I have experienced recently.

I own a 2006 Hawkeye Impreza WRX. I bought this vehicle a short while ago, but I am not 100% certain on what work has been done on the car. I know that it has a dump valve fitted, it is also de-catted and has an upgraded air filter.

Recently I have experienced a few issues that I do not have the mechanical knowledge to explain. Shortly after buying the vehicle the engine management light came on, I took the car to a reputable performance car garage who carried out a engine diagnostic, but they could not see any issues and just reset it, car was running fine before and continued to do so after.

Recently I was pushing the car a little, I was following a car doing around 100mph the car then pulled in and I accelerated to overtake, got to around 120mph and then it was like the car choked and I lost power until it kicked back in, the engine management light came back on. Later that day the engine management light went back off.

The Mrs was driving the car back from work the other day and again the light came back on, only for it to go back off the next day.

At the moment I'm not too sure if the car feels sluggish, or that I am just hesitant about pushing it....just in case. Driving sensibly it feels fine.

Apologies if this does not make any sense, but just wondering if anyone can shed any light on what it may be.

Any help or pointers would be appreciated.

Joe

Hi,

Have you any paper work saying the previous owner remapped the car ? Being decatted it should be remapped if it was the down pipe or full de-cat, if it hasn't been that would possibly be the cause of the EML, and poor running.

Somebody a bit more knowledgable will come along soon and hopefully offer a bit more of a detailed explaination 👍

Unfortunately I don't have any paperwork to confirm that it has been remapped. From what I have read, everything has been done in preparation for a re-map.

This may seem like a nooby question, but to be honest I am a noob! How can I tell if it has been remapped? Will it have to go on a dyno?

Have a look on the forum regarding the WRX 2.5 engine then start saving.
Until then don't drive at 120mph+ unless you're on track

No way of knowing I would google the previous owner on the V5 and get in touch, if you can't get hold of him I would have it remapped to be on the safe side, where abouts in the country are you ?

Just Me.....how did you put this right or identify that was the problem?

Bigh221.....I will see if I can contact the previous owner. I'm in Northampton, not far away from Santa Pod.

Sounds like overboost and ECU pulling back power. If you don't know history then take it to a mapper who can adjust your map for your mods.

Thanks Beastie

In your opinion would that suggest that it has not already been remapped?

what fuel are you using?

I would get it remapped and a health check on a rolling road

also, I'd lose the DV and fit a std recirc valve

I'm using tesco 99. Going to get it booked in for a remap....seems to be the common piece of advice.

well done for using 99 ron , many new owners just stick in 95 ron

It may have been mapped, but there are some poor mappers around. Look at reviews and recomendations and go from there

not sure who your local recomended mapper is though

I've seen a few thread on here recently saying they have a suspicion that tesco99 isn't quite what it should be since the price wars.
Members noticing power loss, getting CEL's and a drop in fuel economy.

The Subaru Impreza is not designed for sustained for high speed driving. You may have caused a terminal problem waving your ***** about racing other cars. The 2.5 does have issues and you may now be on the end of a large bill.

Secondly, why buy a vehicle without knowing about it?

I may sound like I am being hard over on you but some lessons are painfully learned.

Instead of all the guessing, why not get the code for the engine management light that came on ?
Start with the simple things before you get a rebuild lol

If we are having a guess then I will go for..misfire cyl CEL = ring land failure.
I would get a compression test done if the CEL is a misfire.

Well if it's not pulling a code its cutting on something that doesn't flag up. Could be boost cut, or even that the fuel pump hasn't been upgraded with the mods. It does sound like it might not have been mapped.

As mentioned before get that dump valve off and the standard part on, i have heard it can make the car drive alot nicer. Mine is coming off shortly to he replaced with stock, and the cone air filter is going back to stock as well.
