Brake Refurb - Classic 4 Pot
Hi All,
My new Turbo 2000 brakes are binding. Have taken it to my local non specialist garage, who have advised that a new caliper and pad are in order to the tune of £331+VAT (for an OEM part). This seems a little steep to me, so I've told them not to do it.
Does anyone have any experience on getting these refurbed? I'm aware that they are prone to seizing so guess there must be some specialists round that do this, or provide refurbished calipers? Any ideas on prices?
Problem I have is that the brakes are scary - so can't travel too far (I'm just outside Reading) I have used Surrey Subaru Specialist in the past but don't know if they do this?

I really wonder where some people get their experiences from
I fitted 4 pots to my WRX RA with uprated discs and pads and it would lock up very easily (No ABS), even when the 2 pots were fitted unless you drove like a loon they were adequate.
My current Newage JDM WRX with refurbed 4 pots (stainless pistons), again with uprated discs, pads and Automec SBF fluid are very impressive.

Replaced all pistons with stainless ones. They've been good as gold.
Yeah really happy mate, really tidy result - haven't got any pics unfortunately from when they were done. Turnaround was 2 days. If I wanted them properly plated for a better finish, they'd do that in 7 days for no extra charge.

There does seem a big fuss about having to use stainless Pistons, as per the link it's the calliper around the piston past the seal that corrodes too and causes the piston to stick. The Pistons do get corrosion at their tops but most of the time the actually surface that touches the seal only gets traces from the calliper corrosion building up and it all polishes off.
I've even done vehicles with seized Pistons that use an almost Bakolite piston material and again it's the rust build up on the calliper around the piston that seizes it. So no matter what material the Pistons are, they are still going to seize.
I've done a few sets of Impreza 4 pots and it's a pretty quick easy process. I use my 90deg air grinder with a 3m scotch type pad (a worn one) that fits perfectly into the calliper bores and buff the corrosion away from the top of the bores above the seal, then I polish the Pistons by hand.
Here's some pics from ones I've done recently. Some from the gent that bought my car who brings it back for me to service, and some from a bugeye.
Inside the calliper where the part above the seal corrodes.
These are the original Pistons in the pics above. They look like they'd never clean up, but this is just using some paint renovator by hand on the piston surfaces. I use the 3m disc of the dust seal recess and above (but not the piston-seal surface). Usually comes off easily. Even the original seals I've seen in doing a few sets are still looking like new. Dust seals are a good idea to replace though as they are often split.
Did some on a bug and painted them too.

And before anyone says about the Pistons rusting again, yes it's a good idea to get new ones. Even if they are just the standard ones. The reason I did the above for the chap was he'd given it to me for service and new pads. There was no way I was going to just fit pads with the Pistons like that, hence the clean up!

Got a stainless piston kit off Scoobyworx a couple of yrs ago. Not too hard to change once the old seized piston's were out,

Yeah , was thinking of going this way , but after reading the info about the caliper bores being the problem , had a rethink. After all , they are 15 years old
