From Pistonheads..

We Brits generally take a cynical view of our American cousins, particularly when it comes to driving. After all America is full of straight roads and cars the size of houses right? Well it seems we should be learning from the powers that be in Pennsylvania. In stark contrast to the anti-motorist regime in the UK that is trying to beat better driving into us with stiffer and stiffer penalties, the local authorities in Pennsylvania took a wider view of the issues to reduce the death tolls on its roads.

Recently announced crash data shows reductions in fatalities involving teen drivers, heavy trucks and drink driving. Fatalities for teen drivers were down a massive 61 percent in 2000 compared to 1999. Fatalities involving heavy trucks dropped 22 percent, and DUI fatalities were down 5 percent over the same period.

The sharpest decrease in fatalities was for the 16-year-old age group. In 2000, the number of 16-year-olds killed in crashes was 22, compared to 57 in 1999. Acting out of concern about rising fatalities among teen drivers, Gov. Tom Ridge in 1999 called for and won reforms to better prepare young Pennsylvanians to drive safely and save lives. The changes require 50 hours of supervised behind-the-wheel training for 16- and 17-year-olds; a minimum six-months learners permit; tightening a curfew on late night driving; and stiffer sanctions on teen drivers who violate traffic laws multiple times or commit a single high-speed violation.
