Hi + Please help!
Hi all,
Got my first WRX (2001) yesterday, thought I would broaden my knowledge of this epic car,
I'm surprised how good the car is mechanically for its age, the only issue is that I have a judder when gearing down and setting off from a stand still!
I have had a quick google and have found that it may be that the clutch is on the way out... but other places/people say its just the way these are?
Also, I tried to contact my local dealership to find out about if there has been any recalls etc, only to find out that my VIN is not recognised by the systems?!?!?!
Any help would be greatly appreciated,
Cheers
Ash

Did you carry out any checks before handing over your money?
An unrecognised vin number would be ringing serious alarm bells
if it was me. Did you buy it at the address it was registered to
or somewhere else?

the shuddering could also be your not using enough revs or letting the clutch out too quickly, 4wd cars need a bit more pedal when taking off or you'll end up with the transmission trying to stall the engine.
also yeh, no vin doesn't sound like a good thing - it's only a few quid online to check for HPI/stolen/recoverd/woffle stuph, might be worth spending on it to be sure

Hi there and welcome to Subaru ownership! Am reasonably new to this myself but if you are getting judder from your clutch it might be hi spots on the flywheel. I have heard of it other places and if it is that I don't think its massively uncommon and not necessarily an issue (if you can live with it). Probably best you find a decent specialist and get them to have a look tho in case its something serious

Thanks for all the replies,
I got it through a trader who listed it on ebay so never thought to check and when I did the insurance and tax the DVLA found it fine so didn't check VIN at the time.
I also don't think its that I'm not giving enough rpm,
Newbaru - I'm starting to think it is something like this to be honest, need a specialist to take a look I suppose
Does anyone recommend any specialist in the Staffordshire area? (also is there places I should steer clear of?)
Also, how much is it to get standard clutch fitted and fly lapped?
Thanks again!!!

Not really haha, I only paid 1k for the car and it's in great condition!
More bothered about the judder!
As for the dealer they just said they couldn't find it and not much of else, I will try another dealer or Subaru directly

Not great news bout the vin buddy but probably too early to start panicking quite yet. Would HPI it first and see where you stand. Might be worth contacting the trader and seeing what he has to say about the clutch problem (and vin problem if there is one). He might be quite helpful
Failing that the good news is that if you bought from a trader you have a degree of protection anyway. Would recommend you check out the citizens advice bureau as they have a whole heap of stuff on used cars. The injector packed up on my mates golf a month after he bought it and he got it paid for in the end. Is a bit of a pain if the trader doesnt want to play ball but could save you a bob or two
Best of luck mate

I had the same on my 98 wagon, when pulling away sometimes it would judder, got used to for about a year, until finally the clutch went, sold the car as spares and repair, cost more to change the clutch than the car was worth, still the best car I ever had though

The trader said I had 24 hours to bring it back if I didn't like it, and I don't want to part with her now, I think it's a great car part from the clutch issue, so looks like I will try and soak up the cost of the clutch and flywheel once I have saved up enough,

By law you get six months warranty with a trader, even if they state 'sold as seen or no warranty'. A clutch would not normally fall under a warranty however as its been problematic immediately after leaving the dealer, they are obliged to fix it as the car was not sold 'fit for purpose'.

That looks like a bargain for 1k mate. What's the milage and s\hist like? If the only prob is a bit of flywheel judder I'd say you've done alright there. Also nice to see you've made the right choice and gone for a wagon wrx

"It is up to the car dealer offering the warranty to decide on the duration. Many used cars are sold with a three-month warranty, some have one year while others may have none. This is entirely legal.
Although warranties do not have to be offered Lawgistics recommend car dealers provide customers with something in writing (dealer guarantee, claims procedure or simple terms and conditions). This can help manage difficult customers and stop unsubstantiated claims."

I'm afraid your wrong, dealers do not have to give s warranty at all...
