Default Raptor - Does the bung make a difference

Or does it still drone?
Got the chance of getting one for a decent price tomorrow but worried it's going to **** me of with cabin drone on long journeys.

They make a slight difference, I tried one when I fitted my Ninja II a while back but they look bloody awful. Plus the Raptor for me is far too loud. I've had a few exhausts -Blitz Nur Spec (more noise than tone and was far too loud
Ninja II (Nice tone but very quiet)
Afterburner Vortex (Deep tone, not too loud)

if the drone is bothering you ide suggest a different backbox mate, the vortex is loud enough and your looking at one with a deep tone than that. ive got a de resonated centre and h&s backbox and that's loud enough so I can only imagine what the raptor will be like.

ps if you want to arrange collection if got a resonated centre section you can have for £30

The resonated centre section is what makes the biggest difference, and if you are fully decatted , a sports cat also helps.

I take the offer of the resonated centre from Mr Grumpy above, good price that, worth a punt as cheap and easy to do.

HS exhausts still drone on the motorway without a resonated centre, but they go quieter around 87mph, so not ideal

You know if you put a spark plug in it, it will give you an extra 30bhp?

When I was using a blitz on my old type R... The bung made a massive difference I couldn't live without it.... But it will reduce perfomance think I had a 20hp diffrence with and without

Can't see it making that much difference. May be 5hp max. We shall see.

I've used a bung in mine, it does make it quieter and more bearable, but the performance difference is shocking, it just feels like it is being strangled and doesn't rev freely. I wouldn't use a bung again. fit a resonated centre section or a quieter back box

Bloody hell is it loud without the bung! loads of pops and bangs on over run too. The bung does make a big difference though, although I think I might have to get that resonated centre section to kill the drone on long journeys.

Perfect exhaust for b road blasts though.

Don't be gay. I know it's difficult for you but just try.

I'm not sure if it has been mapped in the past. Has also felt more like 280 than 220bhp. And I have had 3 280bhp+ classics so I have an idea.

I noticed it when I had an afterburner vortex fitted 18 months ago but it seems more noticeable with the raptor.

This is back box number 5 by the way. Wonder how long before I get bored or tinnitus!

It was a perfectly legit question, WRX owners are known for their spark plugs in their pipes.

When I changed to the Genome from the HS, spool up went up immensly, twinscrolls actually prefer back pressure, so there are changes that can happen..but not sure 60bhp changes

Genome exhausts are for tarts. Just like type r's. If you had a type ra, then you would go up in my estimation.

Spoken by someone who has never owned any of them Gotta love WRX owners, which affording a Genome is near impossible!

Personally, I like not feeling like I have been dragged in a tin bath as in the RA, and lets not forget what car the Type R is based on.

Well my first proper drive it today proves it is too loud for my wife and son, although the bung fixes that instantly.

Lovely sound with or without.

haha! I'm after something louder and considering you've pretty much owned all my options what is your opinion of:
  • Ninja2
  • vs Vortex
  • vs Raptor
The Ninja2 I think is too quiet for me on tick over... I had a hawk sti behind me, the guy had a blitz nurspec fitted & on tickover and it was ... it drowned the ninjas note from 2 car lengths back

btw I get a drone too with a deresonated centre section, and as Trinity said that is what cancels most of the drone (I tried this temporarily, put the resonated centre pipe back on as the drone did my nut on the motorway at "top speed").. but eventually went back without it for the noise so I think you're going to be stuffed either way. The nurspec is a 3" bore so you have to get a bigger pipe for the centre.. but they do a centre section which looks like its resonated:

Blitz nur spec r

Don't get a blitz nur spec. I had one and whilst at first I loved it, it soon became an embarrassment and was more noise than tone.

It really is as loud as people make out, you'll annoy your neighbours and they'll want to stab you.

Matt what do you have now? My Ninja2 is a tad bit quiet, I just want something louder on tick over. I've seen youtube videos for most systems but most of the recordings I don't think give a true representation of the loudness.

So I've heard the Blitz and its really loud but I like the fact its got a nice note on tick over. Maybe the vortex or raptor is slightly quieter? Gear Head any thoughts on this?

ps apologies for the thread take over

I went from a miltek which was too quiet
To a blitz which was too loud
To a ninja 2 which was too quiet
To a afterburner vortex which is spot on! Lovely on tick over, deep rumble

I second the afterburner vortex , I've got a wrx de resonated centre pipe and its loud on first start up but once warm it really beefy on tick over to such a point as a passer by whilst I was at the lights said " that sounds lovely really meaty " , this is my fourth Backbox after having a Ninja 2 , Scorpion and a prodrive backbox and now I've found the perfect tone I was looking for .

Definitely the raptor mate. The more I drive it, the more I love the roar it gives. plus the bung is always in the boot for when needed.
