Hi all

im going to look at a 2014 demo tomorrow in black, I have had a blob and hawkeye before, how do these compare ?

is it the same engine type, for turbos etc and do they handle the power

all opinions gratefully received

Well the blob and the Hawk weren't the same engine to start with
The blob was a 2.0 block normally supplied with a VF35 turbo unless you had a JDM.
The hawk was a 2.5 block running a vf43 (I think?) again unless you had a JDM in which case it was still 2.0.

The 2014 model retains the more fragile 2.5 engine, but whether Subaru have fixed the problem with head gaskets going on their 2.5 blocks is a question I don't know the answer to, but many people who tune that engine and push a little hard find out the hard way with melted pistons (I've heard cars running as little as 350 have had head gasket failure - I personally know 3 local owners that have had this happen to them, and my local specialist sees a lot of cars with the same problem).

The car itself looks a lot bigger, but the seats inside have significantly less bolstering so would appear to be designed for a more family oriented market rather than a proper sports car which is a shame.
The wheels are wider - think tyres are 245 wide now so should see some more grip.

sorry i was a bit vague re the engines, i had a 2.0(std internals) and 2.5 (api build) i was meaning they can be modified in the same way.

i was worried they would still be having the same problems with hg failure.

first time i have seen one i was quite impressed by it, looking forward to driving it

I've been lucky enough now to have owned Impreza's for over 15 years, starting with a 2.0 Turbo Classic then changing to a Bugeye WRX, Hawkeye Sti and now a 2014 WRX Sti.

In my humble opinion based purely on my experience and having only owned the new Sti for a couple of weeks, for me it's the best so far.

I'm not one for modifying, off the shelf does me, and I'm more than happy with the performance of this car. Interior has improved from the Hawkeye (difficult not to!) with a few gadgets and gizmos and I just find it a much 'nicer' (mmm, not sure if that's the right word) car to drive.

As I said at the start, all in mho, I guess it's what you're looking for or expecting.

I've been driving Impreza's for 10 years, modified and standard. I recently traded my RB320 in for a new STI and it is a really nice motor, handling is spot on, power delivery is fine and interior is a lot better than I was expecting. If you read the motoring press reviews and listen to the opinions of non owners you'd expect the car to be bog slow, cheap and plasticy but it's not at all, you'll see for yourself when you get a shot
I've not heard of any HG failures yet or ringland issues, even in the USA where there has been a lot of tuning done. That doesn't mean there's no risk but so far there has been no nightmares. It's a bit of a marmite car, you'll either love it or hate it. Personally I think it's great. Here's mine out in the snow yesterday.

WRX Blues

I've only spent an hour in two in the 2014 STi but must admit I loved it. Good power delivery (could use another 50 hp) and I really liked the seats - although they do look like they offer less support, they feel like they give more when you are seated.
I like the looks too - but as with most Subaru's - you either love the looks or hate them.
I asked whether HG and studs had been uprated, etc but the sales person at the dealership took the fifth amendment on this...

Had mine since the end of September (black dealer demo too) and it still makes me smile when I get into it, in much the same way as its predecessor (a UK classic) did for the previous 14 years.
One slight niggle - you can't switch on the rear foglight without putting on the fronts first.

Love mine, of course opinion will be biased, but its the best of the 4 other imprezas i've owned, including a classic STi, UK Turdos and a blobeye STi.

I've got a MY2015, had it since November, it's my third scoob after a Bugeye and STI Hatch. So far I've driven about 1800 miles in it, in my view its a great car.

Anybody care to give a rough idea of the offers/deals dealers are doing on the new wrx sti?
Or is everyone paying screen price £29495 (on the road with metallic paint)?

You'll only get a deal with a trade in, even then dont expect anything special lol The dealers don't need to make any offers as the demand for them is still pretty high.

I was quoted around £1000 off plus some goodies. Demand isn't as high as people like to believe hence there are quite a few sat at dealers so I'm sure there is a good deal out there with the right dealer

I actually like the look of the new ones both inside and out, if dealers are listing them at 30k surely there is movement. Unless there is a waiting list i wouldnt expect to pay full cost.

Before buying mine I rang around and found two different dealers willing to sell me a brand new one (including metallic paint) on the road for 28k. Shop around for an ex-demo with 200-300 miles on the clock, haggle, get a few extras thrown in and there's no reason why you can't get one for 1.5k less than that.

same as my Hatch Tony, but if you need your rear FOG light on.. weather is bad.. so you'd need your fogs on too?

Looks like my **** is gonna hurt cos subaru seem to have a big d*ck.

Im not against the making a profit, but a profit on the car, my part ex, nearly every add-on and prob on the finance. Then on all the maintenance to come.
Car buying just got a lot less fun.

I know exactly what you mean regarding value for money on their 'deals' though, and I said it outright to the dealer at the time!

I'm pushing some dealers pretty hard (maybe burnt a few bridges) but nothing unrealistic.
I'd pay screen price with say £1-1.5k options thrown in (any others at cost) and a fair - slightly low price for my part ex.
Nothing unrealistic imo.
Instead I'm getting shafted on almost everything.

Finance deals aren't much of a sweetener either. Roughly double the Apr of highstreet bank loans.

It'll be my first performance car and first scooby obv.
I'd have liked the interior to have been spec'd up a bit more as standard and it's a shame it's lost some of the burble but everything else is pretty damn good.

Hi everyone,

Glad to hear that the new model is going down well. Deals are quite tight and margins for the dealers is not massive (no bonus or back end pay for number of regs). Only two niggles that I've come across: the rear spoiler fowling on rear quarters (now rectified with new rubber mountings) and fuel filler release modification.

HSBC offering me 3.9% apr at the mo on personal loan! now they know my loan for the car's now paid off!
back then I had it at 6.9% which was half the %rate the dealers wanted 14%+

I go there for my servicing ever since I had my 330S... James was the saleman then.. just a shame he couldn't find a white car for me

Stick with your determination is all I'd say, I did!

Ditto regarding first 'performance' car and interior bit, but I wanted to go for that something different to everyone else.

Yes I test drove the Golf R (left feeling a bit 'meh') whilst the A45/new RS3/2nd hand GTR were all out of budget. It will be interesting to see how the new Focus RS shapes up to the STi.

The A45 AMG is a great car, test drove one before settling on the STi, i was left a bit meh by it as well, just a matter of preference and i found it had pretty bad understeer on the limit. Its basic price was what really put me off though, 38K basic, 40K+ with any options added, way too pricey for what it is imo.
