Default Impreza WRX-S Hatch - rolling road result surprise

Hi everyone,

I took my car on a rolling road recently and expected to get around 260 BHP based on the standard specification. However, the rolling road showed my car running 304 BHP and around 306 foot pounds of torque. I definitely wasn't expecting that and was wondering if anyone has any idea if that sort of power is sensible with this engine? Boost pressure seems to be pretty high too (between 23-29 psi in some instances) and I basically don't want the whole thing to give up and explode.

Thanks in advance.

Does the WRX hatch run a TD04 or something meatier?

Because 304bhp sounds like VF territory.

Some TD04's have been known to crack 300bhp, it sounds like this car has been mapped.

Thanks for the comments guys. I'm not sure which turbo the WRX-S has but will try and find out. Ditch I thought that something must have been modified at some point!

I though the wrx s had tdo4 and potential for sti power with re map. My guess would be the previous owner re mapped for safety I'd say the standard s would be capable up to 350bhp. I might be wrong. I'd be happy but I'd try and find out who mapped it.

Not with a TD04, you are into VF territory as the new galaxy mentioned.

I thought you could run 350 with td04 but that's max captain?

if your really lucky a std fitment TD04 may do 300 but most max out around 285-290

hybrid TD04 will do early 300's but still nowhere approaching 350......

as Busta says its a vf52 turbo not a td04. Sounds like its spiking the boost for what ever reason. 29 psi is like 2 bar boost. something not right there & if you persist to run like that its gonna end in tears

Have you fitted any mods to it that arnt mapped in ??

Thanks for the comments everyone. The boost is normal generally (I'm told) but under hard acceleration it does go up (as you'd expect) to around 2 bar like you said.

I just bought the car and I haven't modified it at all!

I've attached a scan. The rolling road people said they wouldn't go above 300 bhp on the car and were going to ask a Subaru specialist about the turbo pressure because they thought it was high. They said they'd worked on STIs and standard WRXs but weren't familiar with the S model.

Thanks for your message. It's the first time I've put a car on a rolling road so don't actually know what's wrong with it. Is it because power and torque is not a steady curve?

basicly yeah, should be smooth curve. Did you get a boost/fuel graph?

wrxs is just effectivly a ppp'd hatch, so if the s has foxed em i'd take it somewhere that knows what there doing.

Thank you.

No that's all I got with it. They took a reading for boost on a short test drive but they didn't give me that, they're going to check and get back to me though. I did explain some of what I thought the differences were (with the Prodrive pack etc) but they wanted to check.

I guess I'll have to try somewhere else!

I'm north of London near Stevenage and I'm not sure of any specialists in the area so would appreciate any tips you might have.

To many spikes and odd troughs there for my liking. I am sure the peak power should come lower down on the 2.5's. The torque spike seems to be in the right place but drops off at about 3750 rpm's.

Could these spikes be consistent with bleed valve? I had a on old wagon that had one fitted and that did the same and used to over boost

Was it wet before you went on the rollers, Wet tyres?

I had a Dyno about 3-4 years ago on this car and came out with 406bhp.....On a VF36

I'd be getting that re-mapped ASAP by someone who knows what they are doing!

2bar is way too much for the standard 2.5 internals. Limit to 1.35bar MAX.

Thanks, it seems to be difficult to find someone that knows what they're doing!
