Default Audi S3 or A3 TDI Quattro

Just wondering what the real life mpg of these are doing?

Im debating going for the TDI, however it will essentially cost more in servicing, and fixing, and will lose the majority of fun factor, yet needing to keep costs down, it would be more economical than an S3 on a day to day fuel basis.

Or would it?

Im sticking with 4WD, could never drive a flimsy FWD car again, and I find RWD impractical for the weather in this country, so I am kinda limited to the A3 range in a hatchback.

Just wondering if anyone has any experience they could share? Referring to the newer 2007+ ones TSFI, not the older 1.8T's

Cheers y'all

the 2.0 TFSI is fairly economical if driven sensibly, i'd expect low 30's average if i were driving it, but if you enjoy the power that'll soon drop. I know people who have TDI quattro A3's which really struggle to get more than mid 30's but they are driven like they're stolen.

Thanks for that, this is what I have heard elsewhere. the MPG of the TDI QUATTRO isn't that great, i guess if driven very sensibly it will be better, but with such a short rev range, there isnt much you can do without sending it in to low mpg format

Audi 2.0TDi's get phenomenal mpg as they spend so much time parked on the hard shoulder waiting for the AA

Went the Audi TDI Quattro route several years ago (3 TDiQ's remapped) and had a new shape S3 last year as a company car for 6 months.

S3 - Lovely all rounder and if you're gentle (which defeats the object), 40mpg on the motorway. As above, 35mpg is totally feasible with a bit of A road.

TDI Quattros - lots of easy torque and very compatible with the 4WD system. Never any wheelspin despite remapping the ones I had - foot down, grip and go.

Depends what you want - I've currently got a classic Impreza and a 4x4 Diesel 170bhp (standard) Skoda Superb (same Audi bits underneath).

If I was buying used for about £7 or 8k, I'd buy a 140 TDi Octavia Scout and Remap it at any of the Audi-VW tuning specialists. Cheaper than the Audis, great winter car and all rounder, and Q Car factor in spades

By a Skoda Octavia Scout 140 TDI for £7 or £8k and remap it. Great all round Q car, with Audi mechanicals and bullet-proof build quality.

I had a new shape S3 for 6 months - great car but what's the point in buying one for MPG even if they are very respectable. Now have Classic Impreza and Superb 4x4 170 diesel - best of both worlds. Previously had several remapped TDI Quattro Audis.

You do know that the a3 equvilants are mostly fwd?
The 2 litre tdi are pants compared to bmws equvilants.
The 3.0 tdi audi is much better economy wise for a 3 litre d.
I have a b8 2.0 tfsi quattro and I average 26-27 mpg sound town driving, no motorways.
A quattro is less at mpg compared to a fwd equvilant.

Is there a reason you want the 4wd?

As said other 2l turbo fwd only hatches will be more ecomonical. My Megane R26 could do mid to high 30's if driven sensibly.

Thanks for you comments fellas

I wont ever buy FWD ever. So looking for a 4wd. I was ooking at the Skoda, but I actually want it to look nice, hence the TDI Quattro Black Edition.

Wont ever drive a BMW as majority RWD , but might be worth looking at 3litre TDI, but I dont believe they do an A3 one.

So no one actually owns a 170 TDI Quattro?

If you're wanting a 4wd because of all weathers, they are 90% of the time fwd and not great in snow, only the later 3rd gen Haldex boxes are 50/50 split which will be the 8L methinks.
The 140/170 there's not much difference tbh, both same troubles, lots of info on audi-sport.net.
Personally I'd never buy a diesel and never have, Only if it was new with warranty and get rid when expired.

Also, yes the 3.0 tdi dosent come in the a3 unfortunately.
Buy the a4 instead, better t3 torsen diff (from the b7 rs4) 60/40 split and excellent in snow

What about the 2.0 tfsi quattro in the a3? Not as fast as the s3 and not as slow as the tdi so in the middle of both.
Stage 1 map will take it from 211-260hp

Id just go for the S3 if that was the case tbh, mpg is reletively the same, and the S3 has the better looks.

Personally I want an S3 with a diesel engine that can do 60mpg. I dont want much really.

But I'm on about the 2.0 tfsi Sline quattro with all the same bloody things (without the dreaded 2.0 tdi block)

Upto to you.
Was just giving you a in the middle sort of thing (best of both worlds)

Hell I would love a rs6 Avant but can't afford it so have a b8 Avant tfsi Quattro instead.

Not exactly a top one is it? Jdm's are ten a penny nowadays, I'd class top ones in today's climate, spec c at least and then s202/03/04,r205/6 ra-R etc

But good luck in your choice

I had a Leon FR 170 2.0 tdi (not quattro of course) for three years 40,000 miles.
Remapped to 201bhp 315lbsft, flat out everywhere, 40-44mpg.
Buy an A6 3.0 tdi auto, 36mpg, and absolutely crazy fast.

Really depends on what you are looking to spend. Here's my rating on the relevant cars I've owned:-
S3 2013 9.5/10, 34mpg overall (Plenty of motorway work)
S3 2009 8/10 - efficient but a bit 'so what'
A4 TDi Quattro - x3 all re-mapped. Great grip and torque. MPG ok.
A6 & A4 TDI Quattro 3.0 245bhp. My favourite all-round engine 42mpg

Currently
Classic Impreza Turbo plus Skoda Superb 4x4 170 TDi estate. My best of both worlds !

I'd buy a 2008 on Skoda Octavia Scout 140 TDi and remap it to about 180/190bhp and loads of torque. 40mpg+ and Q car hilarity.

Quick Reply: Audi S3 or A3 TDI Quattro
