Bit of a vague question to be honest matey. Are you talking about a continent cruising mile muncher (the M6 is very good for this) or a no compromise track weapon (Ariel Atom, Lotus Exige) ?
I'm not sure you can compare a heavily modified Impreza to the majority of cars you've mentioned there as they're comfort-orientated German saloons with large capacity engines and a host of electronics that allow them to perform like they do.

To be fair I was talking more about performace and driveability rather than a motorway car
Hence why most of cars were performance kind of cars I wouldn't drive it every day but wouldn't go for a atom ect as could only be driven in dry were I was thinking a car could take out most weekends with the power there if needed

You can get hold of some pretty nice 911s for £40k or under.
Main thing to watch out for on any of these cars is running costs, they can be eyewatering.

Spending 40k on a car the running costs can't scare you that much lol.
If it were me I'd go for a nice RS4, still have 15/20k left to play with.
Or a nice R35 GTR

R34 are classic and interior looks like classic car,its great car handles well, but still for good one you will be expecting to pay £25k onwards
RS4 not sure if I would choose one, maybe avant/wagon version just for looks, they're tuneable, but if something goes wrong
Thanks,Jura

996 911 Turbo, no question. Performance, comfort, reliability and not too expensive to run either. You could buy a low mileage one for under £30k and have enough left over for insurance etc. I had one 5 years ago and regretted selling it the moment the new owner drove it away - waagh

993 Turbo - ultimate sports car - although you'd probably struggle to find one for that money now, or better still a 964!!!
Old school I'd say Vauxhall Lotus Carlton
Project car - its gotta be a japanese turbo, maybe an R34 with 1000's of horses

A 22b with £15k on engine mods would be my choice, assuming not used daily. Wouldn't depreciate like a lot of the others either.
Every day car then I would have to say gtr

Id say possibly an R34 GTR but potentially the special edition ones? It would only go up in value.
Have you considered a V8 M3? Lexus IS-F?
Throwing some curveballs into the mix
Golf TDI & a Caterham
15 year old Aston Martins
V8 Mustang
Audi RS3
Audi TT RS
