Default Major service and cambelt - how much?

My car will be needing a major service next time around and as such I want to know what this should involve and while at it I am thinking of getting the cambelt done for peace of mind.

So how much should I be budgeting to get this done for?
Thanks

Have a look on any of the subaru specialists website (slowboy racing, scoobyclinic etc) most have service prices on their websites to give you an idea of costs.
I would think cambelt prices are just for basic cambelt change and don't include idler pulleys etc if they need changing too.

Wow insane prices, theres a few website you can buy cambelt kit for £150 as most companies charge £250 which is a rip off.

Major service depends where you go, any normal garage would charge £100 for a standard service. Never had a major service, guessing that would include gear box oil etc

For me depends on what Impreza you have, if its worth more than 4k then worth getting done by a respected company. Any less then i'd get local garage do it

I think last time I enquired at my local subaru dealer it was nearer £700 for full service and £300 for cambelt, but again that was without pulleys.

I've just spent £500 on oils, plugs, filters, cambelt kit and lightweight pulleys. And my local specialist is charging me £275 to service and fit everything. Works out a little dearer, but that way I'm getting all the parts I want and the oils that I specify.

The car I would hope is worth more than £4k (55 plate WRX, 57k miles).

The work will be done by a specialist probably Richard Henry Motorsport who did the last service on the car or similar.

Reason for cambelt is that I am not 100% sure if it was done by the previous owners. I think it would have been as when it became due the car according to the service book was serviced by a Subaru dealer, but sadly I don't have any further proof such as a receipt of works. I would rather pay a little more and make sure then risk any future issue with the car for this reason.

Import car parts sold me a dayco kit complete with all idlers and tensioner for £180 for my blob sti and £160 for my wagon wrx.

do it yourself theyre easy enough to do but make sure you change the water pump and check the oil pump over, may be worth changing the front crank seal while its apart too save having to do it again in the future.

Youll need some anti freeze too as youll have to take the rad out to get proper access to the belt etc.

anything more than £500-600 and youre paying too much. Ive done both my cambelts in about 2 hours each and about another hour or 2 to do a full major service.

Thanks for the info, I will see what quotes I get.

I would love to do this myself but I am useless at this stuff and ATM I don't have the time either.

@Gazza - have you had any issues with the kit that you bought?

Dayco is a known and widely used kit.

If you have the dealer stamp you have the dealers number?
Is it not worth phoning them to see if they have service record for your car, may be able to tell you if and when it had cambelt change.

I have called the dealer, however they changed their system about 2-3 years ago and it does not have records for when my car was serviced there, so they were not much help.

I spoke with subaru uk directly recently and they also told me that until recently the only records were kept by the franchised dealers with no central system until the last 2-3 years.

api are actually £150 before tax so £180, import car parts is £162 , not certain what parts api use , icp use oe parts and dayco or gates belt , the gates belt is £30 more expensive.

but i have no reason to doubt the quility of dayco , they are oe for a lot of manufacturers and have been around a long time.

price from icp including water pump tax and delivery is £217 thats for a my2000 classic sti, there isnt much differance for newage

ALL, as in ALL cam belts are made by Gates Rubber co. Dayco is a belt made by Gates and sold at a wholesale price. Much like buying your gas and electric from Marks and Spencer, they just bulk up orders and use their buying power to get the best price.

No need to change the water pump as a precaution they are almost indestructible. but check it for looseness in the bearing inside the pulley.

Change the oil pump for an uprated one though and look closely at the tensioner.

Cambelts change here is £200.00 + VAT [ £240.00 ] Exchange oil pump for an uprated one is £75.00 + VAT [ 90.00 inc ] ands fitting s a further £55.00 + VAT [ £66.00 inc ]

I booked ours in for a service and cambelt yesterday at a fairly local jap specialist. Price to be expected is 440 + vat. I was told over the phone by the receptionist that they recommend changing the idlers and tensioners, along with the waterpump, every other cambelt change and that this would bump the price up. I told them that we had all idlers and tensioners replaced on the last cambelt change, and that I had heard that it wasn't necessary to change the water pump on them because they are pretty reliable. Car has done 105k, water pump be good for a few miles yet?

It is rare for a water pump to fail on a Subaru, they seem to be a very good bit of kit. The genuine Subaru one is about £100.00 and is Japanese made.

The others fitted these days are cheapo Italian made ones which I doubt will last anywhere as long as an original.
The nuisance is of course, that to change a water pump is a similar job to changing the cam belt, so in normal terms it makes sense to change one as a precaution, when the belt is bieng done. But unless you buy and fit a genuine one I'd leave well alone.

Ditto the idlers, unless they are falling to bits, or are noisy when you spin them free of the belt load, leave them alone.
