Cracked PIAA lens on RB5 - MOT Failure?
#1
As title! - I have one cracked lens, although spot light works. MOT tomorrow - If I put the caps on, do they have to check it?
Any advise appreciated. I've always intended to replace it when it breaks completely as I've always been told they can only be bought whole, in pairs @ 400 notes?

Let me guess - a dealer told you they could only be bought in pairs, right? The same dealer that rushed you 400 quid plus fitting and VAT for lights that cost around 160 quid?
The lenses are available separately - see http://www.piaa.co.uk for where to get 'em.
If it were me, I'd cover 'em, and for good measure take the fuse out so they really can't test them - say they're just cosmetic? Which, with no fuse, they are

Thanks guys, I'll just cover and ignore.
I was fairly sure that cracked lenses are a problem on headlights tail / indicator etc, but didn't think it affected other lighting
I'll let you know how it goes tomorrow.

I don't see how the could fail you. It's not a standard item, but a driving lamp add-on. I would think they'd only fail you if it were headlamps, sidelights, tailights, etc..
Isn't the MOT the same for all cars and doesn't vary on the type of car you drive?

It may also depend upon the MOT centre that is used.
If there is glass missing from the lense, leaving a jagged edge exposed, it could be noted because of the potential danger to a pedestrian in the event of accident (not sure if this could cause a failure).
If it is covered, even with duct tape, so that the jagged edge is covered then it will pass.
Unfortnately you can't stick duct tape over a broken headlamp

MOT passed no problems. Didn't cover lights up and it was at a proper scooby dealer.
They also replaced an oxygen sensor apparently is response to my complaint that it didn't idle properly when it was warmed up and WOW - its like a new car!!.. ssoooo much quicker + more responsive.

Put the covers on...?
Bit late, tis already bust :-)
Seriously thou, I do prefer the look with the covers on, but the lights make a <huge> difference when driving at night, specially round the nice otley back roads at the dead of night.
Always have a fear of em falling off as well for some reason...
I'd rather cough up for a new light once in a while and actually be able to use them rather than cover em up to save them.

Ah, you didn't say you were from Otley, I'm from Bradley, near Skipton, small world innit! The road up past the Sun Inn is fantastic isn't it
Glad your car Passed
RE the pedestrian bit, that only applies to sharp edges caused by corrosion, stupid I know The MOT tranier told us even if the car had a spear sticking out the front it would still pass

If you're interested, David Reid Motorsport sell the PIAA lenses separately, much cheaper than Subaru dealers who only seem to be able to sell complete lamp units. I paid just £20 for a slightly used one, IIRC.
