.. they make the wing mirrors f***** strong!

Driving up towards headley (nr Boxhill) this morning, as I do every morning, doing about 50mph (its a 60 btw), when the mini van (corsa type thing with big back end) that is coming towards me, swerves violently about 10 metres in front of me, hit the wing mirror, god only knows how they didn't take out my drivers side must of dropped their phone or something

No point me turning round to catch up with him, mainly as its just one of those things - well isn't it!?

The paintwork seems to have survived, just.. find out tonight when I clean n wax it

As we all know that are some cluckin' idiots around.. guess this was one of them

Must admit, for a moment thought I was a gonna be shoved into the hedge row - not the best start to the day!

Funnily enough, almost exactly the same happened to me last week. Corsa van (lavishly finished in sumptuous white) decided he could make it through a gap. Boxy thing at the back end caught the wing mirror a treat.

Fearing the worst, had a look at it.

Not a scratch.

Chiark - You have to wonder whether this sort of driving is detailed in the handbooks handed out with these mini van things Glad your motor is ok.

Thanks to all.. I'm just glad it wasn't my drivers side that took the brunt of it.. I have no idea what they were doing
If I'd still been driving the WRX, I would have turned round and had a word!

Glad you are okay and hopefully no damage..

I have a similar thing, I can only assume the hit was different but it shattered the outer casing and broke the glass..

Made a top sound though, you stop and get out expecting half the car smashed in only to find it is the mirror.

Well that was over a year ago.. I bought a replacement glass temporarly from Halford (mondaeo glass fitted just)...
then promptly wrote the car off... doh..

Bought another one with intact mirrors..

JGM

PS: I didn't write it off just because of the mirror it had a fuel system problem too... joke it was an accident honest.. and bl00dy hurt..

Same happended to me a few months ago. The mirror flipped back and then forward again to normal position. Was doing about 30 or so, when the idiot driving a knackered old GTI decided he could rewrite the laws of physics, and squeeze his car through.
No damage at all, not even a scratch.
If Subaru's body/paintwork was as good as that on the rest of the car, I think we'd all be happy.

I was once pootling along the A1 in my Standard Vanguard when it was a single carriageway in the fifties, when this numb-nut in a blue Commer van swerved into my path. Gee wiz I said to dear old Dolly who I was taking up to her Father-in-Laws in Newcastle. I steered her hard left whilst stepping on the braking pedal. Luckily Dolly and I survived our ordeal to tell the tale to Ronnie and Bella over cream teas....Glad you and your car are okay...Blutes

I had this happenonce in a hire car but I had the drivers window open. The mirror glass shattered and I was very lucky not to get cut up bad by the glass coming into the car! Other car never stopped but they never do in these situations. My Jeep has the electrically folding mirrors so you can try to save you mirrors if you can hit the fold button in time.

Cant believe you didnt stop? That can be classed as leaving the scene and you can get screwed for that, it's a serious offence.

If someone hit me and didnt stop i damn well would go after the sod, who knows what damage was done without proper inspection.

Have to say i dont understand this one Alex?

John - I did stop, about 10-15 yards further down the road where a) I wasn't causing an obstruction and b) couldn't have stopped much sooner.

No other b&gger stopped, even the cars behind him, who must of seen it!

As for going after him, I would have, but i wasted time checking the car out, and by then several cars had gone past in the same direction as him - so stood very little chance of flagging the oik down.

What should I do, report it? I have white corsa van as a description, no number plate, and no witnesses!?

What should I do?
All I seem to have is damaged paintwork

Well, seems I escape with minimal damage... two marks that look like stone chips and a little craze on the wing mirror.. mostly polished out... phew...

hi Alex, sorry, i missed your last posts.

I misunderstood what you wrote, i thought you just carried on. There is bugger all you can do if they dont stop and you cant catch up and make a note of their number.

Glad it looks like youve gotten away with very minor damage.

Thats nothing, when I was rear ended a few months back, there was hardly any damage on my bumper. Subaru really does know how to build strong cars wouldn't you say? I had to let the lady go as it was her second accident in 2 months. So basically, I didn't claim from her insurance as there was hardly anything wrong with my car. Chassis is as straight as a guy with gold alloys.
