Question

Hi all

Apologies - I know this topic comes up time and again, but I can't find a straight answer

My MY00 car has a dozen stone chips on the bonnet that go down to the white undercoat, plus some more that don't. The front bumper is just as bad, although the chips aren't so visible because at lest they're not white.

I also have some light scuffs and scratches (and a few more stone chips) elsewhere on the car.

Advice please on what to do? Should I:

a) Ignore them, after all, in a couple of months I'll have a load more anyway.

b) Touch them up myself - I have a pot of Subaru touch-up paint but haven't dared to try it yet. Can anyone please advise on technique and products to use to clean/polish the area and feather in the new paint?

c) Call ChipsAway or similar? I fear this could be expensive; several panels are affected.

d) Complete respray of the affected areas? I really don't want to do this, but might if it's the only way.

e) Flog the car and buy a silver one instead?

Andy.

Welcome to the "wish I hadn`t bought a DBM one" club! The lacquar coat seems to provide no protection at all and the colour (base coat) must be incredibly thin. The Subaru touch-in paint I bought, although the correct paint code (52D) bears no resemblance to the colour on the car, it doesn`t even appear to be metallic? it dries too dark and will show up on anything other than the smallest spot.
A local auto paint supplier has made up aerosols of DBM for me to spray the door mirrors and body mouldings I put on and I either use this sprayed into a small container then applied with a small brush or Turtle Wax chipstick - dark blue lipstick type thingy available from Halfords etc. this seems to work quite well and is a good match, although of course it`s not permanent.
You could always cover the thing in clingfilm!!
(He won`t be smiling when he looks closely at the front of the car!) - JohnD
