Default Newbie,seeking advice

Hi, I recently bought my first subaru, infact my first tubo charged,4wd car so are very much a newbie. My subaru is a 05plate sti type uk, totaly standard and not been modified in any way, apart from the sti mudflaps which i put pn the other week.im only the second owner from new so was happy when I got a chance to buy this car.
Problem is ive got an exhaust problem the middle section looks reale rusty and is starting to blow. So I want to buy an exhaust system but dont no where to start. I want something loudish but m.o.t. pass standard and want a dump valve on it aswell.

Many thabks Pete

Hello mate,

Welcome to the club, STI blob is a cracking car. What back box does your car have on now? A de-resonated centre section won't cost much and will release a bit more of the scooby burble. Being an owner for over 6 years i have read stories about people fitting dump valves and having problems straight after, it's best to stick with the standard re-circ valve. I'm sure a technical minded member will jump on and explain more on the dump valve bit 👍

Enjoy your car

Regards
Neil

Welcome to the club.
Best advice here would be buy a decent stainless second hand cat back system (if you don't want something too loud, a Miltek, Prodrive or Revolution system will give you good performance without being too raspy and loud. Louder and you're looking at afterburner vortex, japspeed etc) - that way you get slightly louder burble and cheaper costs plus you'll never have to replace it again.
If you can stretch to it, buy a decent panel filter, and a full prodrive sports cat and centre section to mate up with the cat back, get it mapped by someone reputable and you'll have a car that'll run about 50-60bhp more than it will do in standard form for about £6-700 outlay.

And don't bother with a dump valve, the conversations on this have been done to death but the standard car's ECU is designed to run with a recirc valve (and MAF) and unless you have it mapped you're more likely to cause idle issues than benefit the car in any way (unless you think the "watoosh" noise is a benefit ). I've seen so many big power cars buy expensive dump valves, only to go straight back to OEM recirc after the car developed idle issues and kept stalling.

Regardless of the people who will reply now saying "but I've had a xx on my car for x years and it's been "fine"" ultimately it's on there for a reason - the MAF measures airflow into the engine and dumping some of that air is going to confuse the fuelling.

Thanks for the advice lads, looked threw the receipts for the car and cant find any so im guessing its just the standard one out the factory. To be honest it looks like its been on for a while. Should I replace the lot? Basic knowledge of mecanics and never had to work on exhausts on previous cars. Is it an easy job to carry out replacing the system? I think im starting to change my idea on getting a dump valve and stopping with the standard, Also have any of you guys heard any people go on about the subaru specialists 'Pole Position' in willenhall as there not far from me.

Thanks pete

Do a search on here for pole position got some good write ups from members on here. If you replace the whole exhaust and replace a cat with a sports cat you will need to remap the car, I would just go for a cat back system. Try scooby world and other such retailers. I have always used haywood and scott exhausts on my car and loved the sound 👍

Hi mate. Cracking car!! (As I have the same) haha I had exactly the same prob as you probably three weeks ago. There was a blow just before the resonator box in the middle of the exhaust. Apparently the resonator doesnt really have to be there so you can replace with a straight section. I was going to do this but decided just to repair the tiny hole and see how it goes lol and if yohr exhaust is the same as mine its standard all the way to a pro drive back box which is stainless. The rest is not.
Hope it helps.
Cheers

Hayward and Scott are good but incredibly overpriced brand new.
Pole Position are okay, but having dealt with many breakers my best experiences have been with Scott and Andy @ Scoobyspares for top service and quality parts.

Everyone has different experiences, but over the last 5-6 years they, together with Saj @ Jap Performance Parts (bit pricier, but good service), have been the best for me.

In terms of exhaust, if you can stretch to it, replace the lot with a one piece sports cat, or prodrive down pipe and decat centre, plus a catback system, panel filter and then a remap.
It's MOT friendly and you get much better performance out of the car (standard STI map is 265bhp. You can expect around 320-350 depending on condition of car with just those mods and a map).
This assumes it's a standard STI, not mapped, not PPP etc.

If you don't then prepare to get embarrassed by a mildly tuned WRX - but if that sort of thing doesn't bother you just replace it with a cheap catback system and be done with it

Yes thats the same problem that seems to be up with mine, cant hear it when driving about but asoon as idle I can hear it and is doing my head in. Heard good things about scoobyworld asweell.Yes MrNoisy that would be nice getting up to around that bhp. Got an ok budget but when looking on sites like scoobyclinic was seeing figures like 1500 for that work. Whats everyone's opinion of getting the car remaped but not on a dyno?

Matty at pole position knows his stuff as you will see if you pop along for a chat, he will no doubt have everything you need on the shelf, as for mapping, road mapping is just as good as dyno mapping only you cant be given an exact bhp figure but most mappers have a good *** dyno and will give you a figure thats as near as makes no difference.

There are a few options aswell, i personally favour the carberry rom over others as its cheaper and has some very good features like antilag, launch control, flat foot shifting and 2 switchable maps, all controlled by toggle switches that can be mounted pretty much where you like
