Default JDM WRX - 4.444 gearbox whine?

We have a 2003 JDM Bugeye WRX with 86k miles on the clock running standard power.

The gearbox code is TY754VBBAA and having looked it up it looks like its a short ratio box with 4.444 rear diff.

When driving the car the transmission has a noticable whine but changes gear smoothly, is this normal on a shorter ratio box?

Going to change the oil tomorrow but before I throw £50 of syntrax in it I thought i'd ask 1st.

Cheers

Its not something i've heard in a newage before, but it has decent service history and hasnt been overstressed so just wondered if it was a characteristic of the short ratio boxes.
