Default Whats best to go for?

I posted a thread a while back about the pros and cons of a mk1 Type 25- and the few horror stories about expensive 2.5 repairs has put me off a bit!

So, would i be better off buying say a standard 2.0 jdm sti (2004-05) which specialists seem to want about £10-12000 for or ive seen uk sti's of same age that have been modded to 340-370bhp that seem to be a bit cheaper?

I understand that the jdm's come with stronger engine internals and so are they more likely to have better reliability than the modded uk sti's??

Also, these 2004-05 jdm sti's- what power are they as standard? is the gearing different? I drove a mates standard 2004 uk sti a while back and at lower revs in the higher gears, i felt no quicker than the my98 uk 2000 i had at the time, whereas looking at performance figures for spec c etc, they're quick as hell at even 50-70 in fifth compared to uk sti!

Decisions, decisions!

Asking all the questions as really want to get back into Imprezas but also to do it right!

Cheers. Matt

Pretty sure the Type 25 is a built engine(forged pistons) as it was a development car of Litchfields, cant see them keeping the standard pistons in there. Same as the cosworth hatch that had forged internals as it was running a lot more power then a standard STi!!

I was in a similar situation to yourself, in the end i managed to get a lovely low mileage 03 jdm sti, 35k milles and 1 owner for 7k.

I previously had a forged 2004 UK STI running circa 400bhp, and i can tell you now even as standard (with just a remap) the JDM car is miles better, it is so much nicer to drive, 280 standard i believe but the shorter gearing, twinscroll turbo, 8k rpm and quick rack steering make it a hoot to drive! So much more usable power

few small mods and you could have the jdm sti to 360bhp and will have a fantastic car, wish I had gone for a JDM STI sooner to be honest and not spent loads on a UK car previously
