Default engine noise and no revs

Hello guys
Was driving my car the other day and was overtaking a van up a hill and suddenly heard a loud bang. Anyway the engine revs died and had to pump the pedal to stop it stalling. It now will not rev over 2000 revs and is very sluggish. Every time I take my foot off the throttle it tries to die. It also makes a loud whoosh noise when driving like air escaping. Anyway took it round to the garage round the corner and he disconnected the Mac plug and the engine went from running really rich to reving as normal. So looks like the Maf was the problem.anyway being careful when I drive as not sure how long I can drive without the maf connected. Any ideas what happened to the engine or is it just the Maf going ? And how long can I drive without the maf connected ?
Cheers
Kris

The engine wont start or run if you disconnect the maf.

The engine will run with a MAF disconnected and if the MAF is faulty it will run better with it disconnected and it will die when you plug it back in. My advice is to read the fault codes.

Funny you should mention boost pipe blown off when I spoke to a garage in the uk that is exactly what they said. Yes starts and runs fine without maf plug attached but not sure how safe it is to run for long without it ?! Please ignore my ignorance know plenty of stats on cars and love them but the actual mechanic side I am rubbish at. How do I tell if the boost pipe has blown off ?

It'll run very rich but shouldn't do any harm short term check all pipes from turbo to manifold. You'll not be going on any long runs looking at your location.
