1995 wrx project or scrap yard ?
hi guys ,
this car has been on my mind since i got it on friday, i'm not sure what to do but hopefully there will be some helpfull comments to make up my mind ,
anyways here's the story
1995 subaru impreza wrx import
got it from my mate knowing the turbo is sucking up oil so a non runner.
im sure he has ran the car with this problem
the car has 188k on the clock , miles i think
no front bumper as it was took of then run over by my mates mother in law....
my question is :
1. is it worth saving
2. is it a simple turbo swap or a half/full rebuild ?
3. is it possible to drop the engine and rebuild my self?
4. what should i do ? lol
i'd love to save a subaru from the scrap heap even if it did cost a bit more than buying a runner.
any info would be great guys my missus and dad cant see passed the sorry state but hopefully you guys will give me the answer and encouragement im needing .
thanks for reading .dai

my question is :
1. is it worth saving
Financially ? Probly not
For your own enjoyment/education/fun? Definitely
2. is it a simple turbo swap or a half/full rebuild ?
May not even be such a big issue hard to tell without a close look
3. is it possible to drop the engine and rebuild my self?
If you are half handy with a spanner and have some basic tools and a bit of interest then 100% yes , as I have just done the very same
4. what should i do ? lol
Depends what you are after , if your looking to buy a cheap bucket and turn it into a few pounds it would need to very cheap and you would need to be prepared to do most of the work yourself and it will still be hard to turn a profit
If you are looking a tinker toy then def do it , some fun !

rust is a big factor for me now. check the rear arches and lower front wings, have a look underneath, if its solid id say its worth it. if the arches are bad then that's 600 to put right properly.

mate the arches are 100% mint , that's one of the reasons thats tipping the scales , the only rust is on the passenger side next to the windscreen which looks like surface rust

What do you mean by its sucking up oil ?
Which turbo is on the car?
if you have white smoke from exhaust you are burning coolant , if you have blue you are burning oil , (im assuming you have smoke from exhaust when you mention oil in the turbo)
burning oil doesnt always mean turbo tho
If you are certain its turbo problems pull it off and check the shaft for movement , if possible replace with a known good unit and see if the issue is solved.

i mean the turbo seems to be sucking up oil and spiting it out the dump valve lol, and it smokes like my missus (alot ) ill go check what colour
edit: the turbo is whinning and the colour of smoke was white but i only had it on for a few seconds as the turbo sounded dreadful
think that will be my starting point , untill i take it of i ashume its the standard td04
