EJ20 Powered Mk1 Escort
Not my project but a mates. He has posted it on my forum so i thought i would share....I will continue to copy and paste progress as it happens.
So here go's....
Ok had this Mk1 escort sat up drive for over 7year's been used as a shed to store junk, i was going to put cossie engine in it but decided on the Subaru ej20 in instead. With the cost of both powerplants and the power a wrx can as standard it was a no brainer.
The idea is to is to lock up the centre diff and run it rear wheeldrive, keep it as close to Mk1 looks and handling as possible
Here's what i have done so far.
The Mk1
have cut out tunnel and replaced front floor pans
I've used a mockup ej20 engine and g/box( no internals in either) to aid with the fabrication of engine/gearbox mounts I had to cut out front inner wing's and widend and box chassis for clearance...made engine cradle to hold engine which is only tacked at the moment, needs a lot more work yet.......also started on making exhaust header's also only tacked.
Removed gearbox tunnel support welded in mount for subaru gear linkage.
Started on gearbox mount today and finished.
In car
Also started on gearbox tunnel will try to finish this week.
Here's an update decided to finish the crossmember and engine cradle
also moved engine back an inch to try and get bit more space at the
front for radiator , its very tight!
Found another crossmember in the garage in better condition than the other rusty thing.
Cut off escort engine mounts and made plates to weld over hole and
stiffen up crossmember
Welded up
Then welded engine cradle nicked the plates from a subaru crossmember where engine mount sits.
Put crossmember back on the car, lined up and tacked engine cradle to crossmember, then removed again and welded up the whole thing together, sprayed to stop rust for now.
and fixed back on escort
Here's another update.....
Ok got the subaru gear linkage and shortened it 100mm so the gearstick isn't sat where the handbrake is. The subaru linkage has 2x bar's one fixes to the side of gearbox to steady the gearstick the other fixes to gear selector on gearbox (but you all knew that)
so shorten both by 100mm.
The rear gear linkage mount i made before was a f**king wast of time, the propshaft hits on it!!
so have made a new one that sits higher up on the tunnel.
Made and shaped new bit of tunnel to go round the gearstick and welded in thew hole tunnel to car.
Also made a propshaft out of the subaru prop and escort prop ,will get it balanced later
Still got to make mount's to hold the split prop mount up, wiil get pics up soon.
Here's a small update...
Haven't done much this weekend i have been working on my Type RA
but did couple of hour's today .
Made two mounts to fix and hold the propshaft to the tunnel but never had time to weld them
Fitted but not welded yet
Ok here's some more pic's managed to do quite bit of work to the Escort this weekend
Finished inside of car, for now anyway. Welded in impreza seat crossmembers, now impreza seat's bolt straight in on subaru runners
Fabricated new inner wings with holes to remove the spark plugs from under wing's complete with alloy cover's
Finished moking up/tacking tubular headers and started to fit cossie intercooler and radiator as i said earlier its a very tight, the impreza rad is way to high i just hope the cossie rad will cool it ok.
The water pipes are in wrong place for impreza engine so will probably buy an alloy rad and get pipes moved/rewelded unless i can find something else.
Cossie intercooler will limit me to 300bhp but ok for now.

am so jealous that people can do this with cars. wish i could do it. having a garage to store stuff helps!
seriously, this thread is wicked and although a lot of it goes over my head, its interesting nonetheless.
Good Luck !

A pic update.......Just popped round to take a few photo's, progress doesnt look like its moved on much but a lot of "underpinning" work has been completed....anyway..
The "mock" engine is still in place whilst things are worked around it....Like the self fabricated rotated turbo setup, mocked up using a VF28 but there is a SC46 ready to be bolted to the finished product..
Inner arch with front strut fitted and strengthening panels welded in at the top.
Turret boxes nicely welded in place.
................along with the strengthening box's welded in place for the 6-link rear axle .
The rear axle is a 2.8 Capri Special Atlas axle which has been shortened with brackets welded on for the link bars for the 6-link setup.
Transmission tunnel.
This is what he is working on at present.....Steel bigwings. The first one already fitted, the second one cut out and work in progess(what he was doing when i just went round)
The front wings will be a complete fibreglass/bigwing all in one affair...less weight..
He is working nights next week so he hopes to get a lot done in the daytime(weather permitting) Ill try and update again soon..
