Default My 1.6 2wd to 2.0 turbo Awd conversion

Hi everyone thought i post up my project i have been doing recently
It all started with me buying a 1.6 2wd turbo replica impreza off a mate

Then after a while bought this Impreza turbo UK model off ebay quite cheap (one on left)

this impreza was quite rotten in places as you can see from pic below so it was decided to swap everything over from the turbo impreza into the 1.6 shell as this was in a better condition

So myself and my mate gary set to work and after a few hours remove whole engine, gearbox and subframe from the turbo impreza

Then set about stripping out both cars of everything right down to a bare shell

Started up engine ran perfectly finished off any odd bits here and there took it for a test drive really drove well and 2 weeks ago it went for a mot and passed first time so very pleased have now got it on the road, the old turbo shell was scrapped and the majority of the work was done in about a week this was done back in May

Cheers it was hard work but woth it in the end up til that point id never really worked on a scooby before so it was a real learning curve for me

Out of curiosity what you doing with the old engine??

I'm after a 1.6 engine for a project I got in mind.

Fairplay for the conversion but....why?....Surely there would of been less work in repairing the WRX..

probably would have but would not have been as fun it need alot body work doing it was really bad underneath needed alot of welding for mot, new rear wheel arch, both frong wings, sills and fuel filler pipe to name but a few

how long in all would you say the conversion took mate? and was it just dash wiring you had to change or complete rear car loom aswell?

The bulk of the conversion was done in about 3 days but getting everything wired up and working and refitting the whole interior was done in week. I swapped all the wiring looms

Insurance for it as 1.6 Fully comp with direct line was £640 and for the turbo cheapest i've found was around £1600 third party fire & theft and im 23 years old

Was about the same i got the quotes by using go compare would probably get cheaper quotes through a more specialized insurance company

No mate using the turbo one unfortunately fwd rack went with the scrapped car

Don't suppose you still have the rear wind up window mechs? will swap for elec ones!

Did you remember to take the bolt on strenghening bars off the old turbo, behind the front wings? you will need these with the new engine

Rear window mechs went a while a go as now got full electric windows all round

Yeah its got those bars fitted behind the wings very nearly forgot about them only took them off at the last minute before shell was taken for scrap

top conversion bubby i wanted to convert my gx bug to turbo but i was pushed away for the time involved with work and family commitments etc although ive done many a engine swap gearboxes etc solid classics are getting thinner on the ground glad someones stepped up a done it good for you
