Post Newage WRX Project - 2.1L Stroker engine buildup

Alrighty buddies, tought it would be cool with a project thread for my own scoob to gain inspiration and to get recommendations, usefull facts and tips 'n' tricks that i know is out there in your brains!

My name is Mattias, 23 years old from northern parts of Sweden.

Reason for this engine build is simple: Rod bearing spun on 4th cylinder (while dynoing the car) crankshaft went bad and one of the rods to, all rod bearings were worn when i seperated the block halves. Oil + filter had only 500km's on it when it was dynoed. This was 2 weeks ago from now.

The car was tuned by my EcuteK tuner moments before dynoing. He said it did great on the dyno, engine was running fine, no indications on the knock sensor. Smooth engine as he said it. I wasnt on spot so i cant tell how it looked/sounded like.

But when i fired it up to go home, i heard 3 knocks, and idle rpm was very low, i popped the hood, reached the throttle wire and had it up too maybe 2000 rpm.. knock knock knock again when i released the wire. Called a trailer and went home.. the tuner is located 550km's from me so i wasnt home before morning day after.. Not what i expecting to happen..

Boost was 1,48-1,49 bar max. Engine pushed 324 bhp, it was a very hot day outside and they had a vent from the roof blowing air (hot air this day) to the front of the car in 120km/h. Intake temp was higher than normal he said, in reality you should se closer to 340 bhp.

Before the car had run 1,2 bars for 1,5 years. Reason for retune was beacause i installed the STi pink injectors and wanted a little bit more out of it.

Today's spec:

EcuTek Tune
IHI-VF34 Turbo
Ebay TMIC
STi 550cc (565cc?) pink injectors
Exedy Stage1 Clutch
GFB Hybrid blow off.
666 Evil power 3" Cat-back
3" Invidiai Down-pipe
DC Sports up-pipe
Silicone inlet pipe
100-cell high flow cat
255L/h Wallbro pump
HKS colder plugs
HKS panel filter & snorkus removal

Also have been installing some whiteline, perrin, prodrive & CDF-racing stuff on the chassis.

END OF THE HISTORY PART

Budget doenst look too good atm, but i will work on that and try to spend on necessary parts.

My current plans is to build a 2.1L stroker with the following spec:

EJ205 rear thrust block with standard heads
STi (-06) 79mm crankshaft
Forged Manley rods
Forged 92.0 mm Manley stroker pistons
ACL Race series main and rod bearings
Headgaskets, unsure of thickness.
Uprated oil pump
ARP head studs
Oil cooler instead of modine

Will put the same externals back again so i can run atleast this summer and fall. Then i might go with bigger injectors, turbo etc..

Bought the car this new years eve, so i state my self as a noob but don't under estimate a fast learner
Have built an engine or two with a friend before tough (not boxer)

Will post some pictures for ya as soon as i find out how to

Some pictures to start off with.. Sorry for most of them being mobile phone pics! Will try to borrow a digital...

Current look, expect from the new windshield streamer.

Streamer...

Rota Gforces with blue light weight nuts...

Engine bay before tear down...

5 seconds into the build, hood straped back to the roof wing

20 mins later...

3 hours later...

Out it comes...

5 hours total... Struggled with one engine mount, the whiteline swaybar is right under the nuts, ofcourse i tried but one nut went bad.. Still ok for a first timer!

Empty rooms... Will definitely nead a proper clean here... Might bring some WR-blue into it to!

Dissemble...

Just a bad pic...

This was the hardest tighted bolt ive ever loosened on an engine! 1 hour on this one, a chapter for it self.

Picture speaks...

Short block...

brought a tear to my eye (not really)... But still disgusting!

Rod bearings... Worst eye candy ever...

Engine waiting for clean up...

Dynosheet. Numbers with a bad bearing or two?

Crankshaft showed up this weekend. Looks good to me..

But it looks like it needs a different gasket where the flywheel sits? or am i wrong?

Old one to the left, and the "new" 79mm to the right...

Better view of the difference against the flywheel...
