STI 5 Wagon 2.57 sleeper...
Hello All,
I have just run in my new EJ2.57 built by API.
She has a brand new 2009 2.57 motor from Subaru rebuilt by API with forged pistons, steel con rods and a MD321T+ turbo.
Other modifications include a 6 speed conversion and limited slip differentials front & rear (pictures to follow), Simtek ECU with Anti-lag and Launch control (by Bob Rawle), front mount intercooler, oil cooler and a load of other stuff too numerous to mention.
The ultimate sleeper! No one would ever guess!
I thought I’d share some pictures of the rebuild….
Cheers,
Ian.

The basic engine cost:
£2,400 API supplied 2.57 2009 block from Subaru with forged pistons, steel con-rods and other stuff you see in the pictures.
£600 API Engine build labour – puts it all together
£550 API Engine fitting labour, includes all fluids & running in map
£250 STI gasket set
£50 Cam belt
£150 Head studs
On top of that you have oil cooler, sump modification & oil catch tank, Simtec ECU, Remap, Intercooler & unexpected costs.
I chose to go with the MD321T+ which meant having 740cc injectors & 300lph fuel pump which of course meant the gearbox needed doing so I decided on a recon 6 speed, recon rear differential (both by API) and then of course ceramic clutch & billet flywheel.
It is all cause & effect. The total runs into 5 figures very quickly.

Sleeper indeed - very nice
I suspect you are aiming for circa 475 / 475? That will be a fairly quick car indeed! Are you planning to put on the 1/4 drag strip or track at all??

These are also interesting pictures (IMHO). They show the difference between Open deck, Closed deck & Semi closed deck blocks.

Dave at API has guaranteed 450 / 485. If it doesn’t make that it will go back for whatever rework is necessary to fix it – free of charge (he has been GOLD so far).
Bob Rawle recons it could be as much as 480 / 500+ so I have everything crossed.
I’ll post the dyno print out here and carry on the story for all who are interested.
Are you kidding? With launch control & anti lag I’ll be straight down the ¼ mile strip. I’m also keen to max it out as well, with the appropriate supporting modifications (oil cooler, FMIC & Rawle map) I’m hoping she will be robust enough to cope.
I chose UK ratios because it is my daily driver (I did 15k miles last year). This means 1st to 4th are identical to the GDM 6 speed (i.e. very close) and 4th to 5th and 5th to 6th are longer.
It’s a mad dash to 4th then it does approx 3500 rpm at 85mph in 6th .

If you give customers a courtesy car with all the mods on it - you spend all your time repairing it
In the last year we have had it returned with a repaired / painted front wing and n/s headlight. Nothing mentioned by the user at the time.
AND it came back during October / November 2008 with the OSR door been repaired and painted - again no mention by the user.
Not by Ian Westwood I hasten to add.

Ian,
Cracking looking car you have there! I'm running the same turbo but using a 2.2. I also have a UK 6 speed and my car is wagon! Everyone knows Wagon's are quicker! I'm not too sure about the figures mine is putting out but would estimate a safe 450/450. I'll rolling road it sometime this summer.
Have fun on the 1/4mile it should fly!!
Cheers
James

That’s an interesting question! Depends who you speak to.

I'm sure with that Turbo and Bob's mapping you'll get your figures alright. As with the other comments above, for a classic that will be bloody quick!

Well, if I had any thoughts along the lines of “this is quick” before they just evaporated and have been replaced with thoughts along the lines of “Fuuuuuuuuck this really feels quick now…”
If anyone else is considering this conversion. Just go for it. It is completely mental, sounds great and picks its feet up in just about any gear and speed (within reason) without being too frightening.
Don’t get me wrong… it scares me but it is actually very easy to drive (touches wood). Very docile burbling around to the shops as well.
Great job. Hats off to Bob & Dave. Thanks.
Now if you’ll excuse me I’m going for a drive!!

Just posted some more pictures.
Unfortunately I don’t have any of my gearbox being rebuilt with the modified syncro-rings but there are some general shots of the install and the building where Dave does all his gearbox work.
