to be totally honest mate if your mate hasent got any welding experience, welding on thin car panels can be difficult. I would advice getting some scrap parts to practice on and if possible borrow a small hobby welder from somewhere before splashing out loads of money.

for panel work you only need a max of 100 amp hobby welder even then you will never max it out. dont buy a gasless one there **** they still do the job but even harder to get a nice weld. machine mart have some decent ones for little money.

hi mate, just spotted your thread on here...

just ask... if he's not welded befor get down to the local college and ask, i used to run those courses at leeds college, and they will help alot!!

Borrow or rent first... some people don't like been burnt on a regular basis!!

do not spend money on a "hobby" set (borrow or rent), i appreciate what people mean but they have no fan in them to keep set running when they get hot, nothing worse than sat for hour on end waiting for machine to cool down!! you need to be spending £200+ ish on a set to go upto 150 amps so as it will cope with long term use, and will weld thicker steels!! you won't always be welding panels!! i use the thinest wire i can, 0.6mm as you have greater control with the power... as guy above says do NOT go gas less... they are rough as the badgers bottom!!! also i do not use CO2, i always go for a argon co2 mix, better penetration than gas less, and smoother and more controlled than co2.

what else???

hope it helps and isn't too late

bob

sorry for replying in projects to this but your box is full to bursting as barrymore would say so here it is!!!
