Default The Bullet.... Slowboy Style

When owning a Subaru, I think every owner goes through a phase where they are not sure weather they wish to modify their car or not, some of us think about it while the clever owners discard it completely....

I fell in the not so clever category and consequently am here posting this thread.

The car (Or what it once was) is a STI 3 RA.

The aim, to try and get as close as close can be to a road car capable of a 10s 1/4....

Competitions to be entered will include SS, as well as other 3/4 mile shootouts such as "Fighting Torque", where specialist launch techniques may not be a big advantage...

The plan- Knowing where to start on building a 10second road car is not an easy thing or decision....

However the best and 1st thing I did was to contact Slowboy-racing uk With over 30 years of experience in building race engines these guys are in no doubt the 1st avenue to explore when looking for a big power build. The aimed spec would be ending in a very similar setup to the Slowboy demo car, running a 10.6 1/4 and driveable on the road.
Having set up a consultation with Neil from Slowboy, we began planning the setup and how we could get the most possible from it. The 1st stage was capacity, with more and more people opting for the 2.5 builds it seemed an ideal solution, however after reviewing my plans for the car it was thought best to go for a 2.33 build.
The Stage 4 motor was opted for, which included:

Cp Pistons
Acl Bearings
Pauter Rods
EJ22 Closed deck
Fully balanced

Turbo setup was going to be rotated GT30/40R, Tial wastegate with screamer pipe.. Cooling a Lateral fmic, with it all being fuelled by twin walbro pumps and some modified injectors..

With the setup near enough finalised the date was set and the car booked in.

At this moment I would like to point out Neil's help in this. Throughout the whole process he has been the model of customer service and a fountain of knowledge. Completely guiding me though every single option and trying to save me money at every opportunity. This was extremely refreshing in comparison to many big tuning companies who have unfortunately lost the enthusiast aspect of their day to day running. On first arrival to Slowboy, there setup is very compact yet robust, with no extra gadgets or "buy me" gimmicks. It's just a "does what it says on the tin" type organisation, that does exactly that and builds big power cars, or whatever you require.
This was refreshing for me and straight away I knew that the level of commitment that would be shown towards my build would be hard to replicate elsewhere.

With me happy with everything, it was finalised and the date set.
The Bullet began it's new journey into the next stage of life...

Throughout the build, I was fully updated with all and everything that was happening and modifications were made when needed, we also decided after some consideration to go for aftermarket heads. Aftermarket cams were chosen alongside with supertech inlet and inconel valves, retainers, and springs etc.... The list was growing day by day, thankfully the bill wasn't as long...

Now the build is nearly complete and is coming together, the final spec looks something like this:

Engine:

Motor 2.35

EJ22T Closed deck block
Cp custom pistons Swain tech coatings +20thou
79mm cross drilled polished, balanced crank
Pauter 4340 billet rods
Acl Race bearings
Arp Rod bolts
Arp head bolts
Fully balanced short motor
Cometic head gaskets 051
Compression ratio 8.5 1
Sti heads extensively ported and polished
Supertech one piece inlet valves
Supertech inconel exhaust valves
Supertech double valve springs
Uprated and Shimmed oil pump
Rotated Ported and polished and matched to inlet phase 1 inlet manifold
Aeromotive fuel regulator
Twin bullet filters
Parallel rails
Modified 440cc injectors
Twin walbro fuel pumps
100mm inlet cold air feed with K&N filter
Ported Garrett GT30/40r
Tial 38mm external waste gate with screamer pipe
Ported Hks Headers
Blitz Nur Spec exhaust
Lateral Fmic combo with alloy hard pipes
Apexi PFC mafsim

Drivetrain:

PPG Straight cut synchro 1-4 Gearset with UK 5th gear
Steel selector forks
Exedy Twin Plate clutch
Plated rear diff
AST Sportline suspension kit
ALK
Front and rear anti roll bars

Braking:

Stoptech 328x28 BBK

I think that's it, in a nutshell....

Neil has been kind enough to take some pics of the progress for me and they will be up v.soon....

Looks great fella.

This is nigh on the exact spec of my current build being performed by Zen on my STI4 RA, the spec list is in fact practically identical. Just a few weeks from completion now
