Question V8 PROJECT CAR

Hi guys was thinking of getting a v8 project car, a bucket that needs doing up. Would like a 60's ford Mustang but cant seem to even find any prices. But also been told a chevy nova are pretty cheap and do-able. Any suggestions?

eBay - New & used electronics, cars, apparel, collectibles, sporting goods & more at low prices
Go to 'project cars/or Project vehicles and you will find about 12 pages of them.

This will give you a good idea on prices.

55 Chevy for me!

You could take a look at the cars for sale on Rod & Classic mart:

Rodandclassicmart

Also the classified ads in the back of Classic American magazine might help?

American car spares are pretty easy to obtain in UK (ands now its $2 to a quid) though like all cars they can be bottonless pits and you may find it cheaper to buy a runner that someone else has already worked on

Good luck

Cheers guys, will get a copy of the mag, good site spot hotrod. Talking to mates dad the other night says he knows someone in Burnley who imports american cars. Like you said wold probably suit me better to have a runner already then do it up from there rather than a shell with a bollocksed engine. Been doing a little research and will be very expensive to do it that way. Saw a lovely mustang for $19k might be the kind of way to go.

+ tax/import duty etc etc .
An old yardstick I used in the 70's was 1$ = £1 when you had paid your dues.
Exchange rate then was about the same as it is now (ie fantastic)

Another possible place to look could be Australia, they've got old V8 Holdens and Fords aplenty

Always fancied an early '70s Falcon XB myself

Good idea to start with runner, but bear in mind that the engine work is likely to be much cheaper than the body - so go for the best dry-state US car you can (or restored). You can spend thousands on panels/repair/paint but a brand new 5.7l Chevy V8 is only about £1,300 and tons of 2nd hand engines & tuning parts around, and mechanical parts are pretty easy to get now

Plenty of people bringing in personal imports from USA at the mo' with the $2 pound, but as above, all-in cost can rack up. You'll pay £1500 + for shipping/insurance and then 10% duty, then 17.5% VAT on the whole lot.
Worth it if there's a specific car you really want (and you can view on holiday?) but bear in mind that there's no MOT in California so something old and cheap that drives may need a total refurb (brakes, steering, suspension etc) just to make it safe!
Some good prices for really nice finsihed cars at present though. 10,000 cars for sale currently here: Hemmings Motor News: Auto Classifieds - Hemmings Auto Classifieds feature cars for sale nation wide.

Everyone I know who has imported recommends Kingstown Shipping:
Kingstown Shipping Ltd ship Cars, Motorcycles & Boats USA UK USA Imports & Exports

Cheapest is always to go for something someone else has sunk their cash into - either in US or (easier) something already registered in UK
