Default cheap scoob, new engine, my story...

ok saw a nice cheap scoob on ebay, so i bought it
the car was from north wales, so i took train down to see it.

hmm i thought cheap car
but its in mint condition
only thing is the engine was knocking its *** off
now cos the car had bin stood for weeks i asked the owner to run it round the block and use brakes a little to get rid of all rust

so next thing after agreeing to a price of £2400
i rung the AA :P lol

to cut a long story short, mr AA man turns up to check car out and screws his face up and says ill check ur menbership and ring for a recovery to take u home
bit cheeky i know but hey, its got to be done.

ok with the car on my drive saturday afternoon i set about removing the engine....

and a few hours later we have this...

and this....

ok so next i set to work at sourcing new parts
and wow i got a sweet deal on a 3500 miles 2004 engine for £1500 with all ancillaries and turbo.
also went on ebay and bought all crystal bits for lights n indicators.
also treated myself to a race manifold.....

also some manifold spacers from carl davey form this forum, thanks mate...

bought some frost paint(P111) from frost.co.uk and some alloy cleaner from there also.

ok so i took off the inlet manifold and use a wire brush to get loads of the crap off it first.

now waiting on frost cuming and the cleaner.

ok couldnt wait for the frost to come LOl
wanted to get her up and running.....

ok so this day it started pi$$ing it down, so went n bought myself a gazeebo
not letting no weather man stop me getting my work done

so managed to get new engine sat in the car...

then connected a put everythign back as it should be
i wanted to leave the engine as is with its own inlet manifold on it
but the forces of engine management and electronics was prooving to be a bit of a bitch
so put my inlet on there instead
also resprayed a few of the black plates after wire brushing them down to make em nice n shiny n new looking

my little boy wanted to get in on some of the action too so he grabbed a spanner and got to work

so got it all connected back up and was ready to fire her back up
turned the ignition on a couple of times to get the fluides flowing b4 firing up.
so decided it wa time and the wifes ol man who'd helped me out doing all this was standing by with a cheesey grin on his face
so i turned the key and turning is all it did
would not fire up for the life of me
so connected the ecu wires up under steering column to see if there was any errors cuming back
and low and behold i had 1 long flash followed by 3 quick flashes..
error 13 = camshaft position sensor
so decided to put a few posts up to check a few things out
and got a coupl eof same answers back
so after talking with alan bell on the phone he came back to me that the pulleys had to be changed
the crackshaft pulley and the camshaft pulley :S
never done this b4 i thought....
so i managed to get hold of mr wallis and he confirmed it along with p20psd ( thanks guys )

ok so what i had to do to get her to fire up was change the top right pulley and the center one
after pulling them off my old engine and the new one i did notice the timing notches were totally different from new to old car

so swapped em over and with more help from steve i got all the timing lined up and done in less than half hour
only had the right wheels slip off round a couple of times
but all sorted steve said get a big ratchet and turn the engine a couple of times by hand to c if the timing lines up.
so i turned the engine twice, and cool the timing lined up no probs all spot on
he said now do it again just to be safe
again, to which they were **** on
so put all covers back on and connected belt back up on the front.

ok i was ready to turn the engine over.....

jumped in drivers seat and put key in ignition and BANG, **** what now i thogut just kidding
the engine turned over first key and fired up straight away
not a murmer from the engine, only thing that bothered me was the temp guage going right off the scale
just an airlock in the water system to which came out after 5 mins and a little more top up of water once cool and all sorted
now i have 1 car running sweet n dandy at half the price.

after a few mins hard work my lil man was poofed out so he hit the sack

id like to thank dave_wallis, alan bell, gary for supplying the engine, p20spd, teddykiller1 and any1 else thats had a say in helping me
i really apreciate this and if i c you guys out in the pub, the rounds on me, no taking **** dave :P hahah

thanks again guys

dave

more to follow.......

Good effort!

Have you got something special to drop in, or a standard lump?

Give the engine bay a bit of a spring clean whilst its empty as well. You'll regfet it if you don't.

hey dave
hows it going
yes we moved, ive moved about 4 times since i last hooked up with ya mate.
PM'd you earlier this week
give us a bell, may need some pointers on wiring this new engine up to my old plugs.
think ive got it but i remember you wiring urs up from scratch

yes carl was reading thru your post, pmsl when i saw the pic of it in the dish washer, my missus was on the floor too

yeah thinking of may b a bigger intercooler or a FMIC
cos i dont think mine will go on
or the pipewok on the 2004 engine i have is slightly different.
ther is a few breather pipes under the manifold that im not 100% sure about
but when it goes back in the car im sure it will all come back together
only thing im mainly concerned about is the coil packs on this new engine, they have 2 wires going to each, so im not sure where to wire these up to, or if they are ok direct into my loom.

only 1 plug is different on the new engine and thats to the left side looking from front of engine
its a diff plug on old inlet loom, but ive traced wires and think its all good
nip to maplins and get a decent male n female plug tomo to do the rewire.

what ya got for sale dave ?

As i told Alan Bell yesterday, you need to change the cam and crank wheels before it will work.

Nice work mate and a cheap Scoob. Hope you patted yourself on your back when she fired up. Nothing more satifying than say "I did That "
