Default Yet another TD05 project....

What with all the other TD05 projects about on here at the moment I thought I would follow in a similar style as it seems the perfect way to gain knowledge from others, understandably I have not posted much on here before and don't expect a great response but still I'll plod on with a description of the car and a few pics of whats happened in a relatively short time.....

It all started off in June last year when I bought a standard MY98 uk turbo locally and got bitten by the bug, having never owned a turbo'd car before it was all a bit awe inspiring...

Brief description of mods include

Apexi Power Fc - Mapped by Andy F.
Power FC Commander
Hybrid Cosworth intercooler and custom pipework
TD05FE Turbo - Supplied by Andy F.
Knocklink
Walbro 255 fuel pump
Phase II injectors and adaptor kit - Supplied by Carl Davey.
Magnecor ignition leads
K & N cone filter custom mount
NGK PFR7B plugs gapped at .6mm
Full 3” open mouth decat exhaust
Samco hoses in Blue
Whiteline Flatout Springs on OE shocks at present
Powerflex antiroll bar drop links front and rear
Powerflex diff mounts and tie bar bushes
Powerfelx antiroll bar D-Bushes
Four pot front caliper conversion
EBC discs
EBC pads (REDS)
7 * 17” Compomotive MO’s in white
215/40x17 Avon ZZ3’s
Interior stripped of non essentials such as rear seats all the sound deadening etc
STI Lamco boost gauge mounted on steering column shroud

A picture of the engine bay, still needs lot of work and still to tidy up chargecooler installation but its getting there.

I have also taken out any unnecesary weight from the inside, like the rear seats and all the sound deadening, need to replace the lardy front seats with something a little more featherweight but have yet to find anything as confortable as the originals and at a reasonable price so may end up staying with these...

Cabin noise is somewhat manic now and although unbearable at times I do not regret doing it in the slightest!

I started out originally with the intentions of small worthwhile mods but that plan turned to sinders when I started frequenting the forums, what started out as an exhaust and MBC ended up as the spec above...

The most major mod has without a doubt been the TD05 conversion as supplied by the legend that it Andy F and of course an Apexi PFC mapped by his own delicate hands...

The mapping itself was a little scary as whilst trying to communicate with Andy via hand signals (Tis a little too noisy) and dodge the trucks flocking to the Port the end result is superb rock steady idle and rock steady 1.3 bar all the way to the redline..

The Td05 is a fine piece of kit and even looks the part in fetching gold!!!

The hand commander is a useful tool although sometimes wish it had a memory for those occasions when you want to look back at a particular detail...

Carl Davey supplied the injectors and adaptors in time for the map session and have to say coming from a mechanical background the adaptors were top notch and made the fitting a less complicated task.

Had the car on a rolling road recently and although a little disappointed with the figures the general consensus is that I shouldn't be..

293.8 bhp @ 6334

258.5 lb ft @ 5191

This was made at a tad over 17 psi and it usually holds around 19 psi on the road although the peak torque appears to be made rather high especially as i usually see 1.3 bar @ 3000rpm..

So close to the magical 300 mark but not quite.

Next on the list is headers but with so many options its so hard to decide...what with slip joints, flexi joints, 2 bolt and 3 bolt up pipes where do you start!!!

Thats enough for now I guess and thanks for reading any input in what to do next or any other ideas as to the RR figures I am all ears!!...

A pic of the car on the rollers...

The intercooler is an Escort cosworth item and has proven very worthy at this stage of tune, how far it can be pushed is an unkown quantity so only time and boost will determine this part of the project..

It was a very cheap build and in total cost me no more than £250 to build including the samcos and pipework...

The VTA has gone now as the novelty wore off and it leaked constantly and made the car run like a bag of nails....!!

This is the most recent addition, the chargecooler tank, this runs via a mocal rad and the water is circulated by a Volvo re-circ pump and I have yet to try it as i am looking for a charge temp guage to see if it makes any difference, only reason to do this is for keeping the power up during the warmer weather...

This little lot has cost a small fortune and unlike Carl I did not set out with any plan just went forth and multiplied so to speak, i would like to go to the next stage and head for 350bhp and find that elusive 300lbs ft of torque but am scepticla as to whether this is

A:- Reliable.
B:- Feasible.

I'm sure you will all advise the best way to acheive this!!!

Cheers

Derek

Very good install ! RR result may just reflect the RR as per Andy F. website

http://www.andyforrestperformance.co.uk/26063.html

especially from your comment on boost threshold. Not sure you will get 350 bhp on straight pump fuel and daily runner tune from a TD05H-16G, bbs.22b.com "Topic: can a tdo5 F/E make 360?" link below

I think the rollers were partially to blame as the run was done without the turbo being properly warmed up and the like I say acheiving my boost target would have helped I am sure.

My next step is to go to another Rolling Road and compare figures if I am still down then i shall need to see why, or more so ask the more intelligent ones why!! LOL...

Have read the thread on 22b before and am still confused as to whether the 16G will make 350 or not plenty of people have seen the figures so on the right car on the right day etc etc i guess it may be possible...

Hi Derek, interesting to see you're going to be using a chargecooler. I'd be keen to hear your results on it.

If you turned the headlights off you might have made the '300'?

It's not the numbers, it's how it drives

Carl: Still waiting on the charge temp gauge etc but am hopeful that this will work. Don't think there will any drastic changes in temperature tbh but every little helps if we do actually get warm weather this year...

911: Drives superb and am really not that fussed about figures, my only concern with it was that the torque seemed so high. From the graph all seemed well on 17 psi but who knows if all is well at 19 psi?

Its not really a major concern but after spending so much time and effort on the car it is nice to know what power the engine is producing so you can gauge relatively what different modifications have an impact or not...
