Default project 22B - almost at the end

After years in the making, my car is finally in the home stretches.

Only things left are electrics which I hope to have sorted this week.

Figures on the dyno were 555bhp and 556lbft (22B and 22C), but I have made a few changes in order to try toachieve these figures on less boost to reduce engine stress. As it is, I don't believe these engines can survive long at 500+ lbft between 3000 and 6000.

Spec is heavily discussed along with pictures of progress on 22b.com bbs

Most of the engine and its ancillaries have been supplied by Mark @ lateral performance so have to say thank you to him, Also thanks to Tweenie Rob, also known as Rob G for installing lots of tricky bits after Moray Mackenzie and Pat Herborn put in some serious hours to get the engine in place.

Thanks guys.

Don't think there is much special about this car which I can tell those who don't know about it already, except to say no aspect of it hasn't been considered. There has been no holding back in terms of engine mods and the rest of the car has been altered to suit.

I have also put in some effort to retain air conditioning whilst reversing the manifold by fitting an electric power steering pump.

This set up uses the Lateral Performance intercooler, which performed marvels on the engine dyno and a custom air con rad install taking the place of the standard top mount. I don't know how well it will work yet as it hasn't been fully connected up yet with other issues to sort first, bit it isn't too far away.

Am sure there will be more to follow if anyone is interested.

I'm interested!!

Didn't you have any qualms about modifying such a car?
Was it an import or Type UK?
It certainly sounds one hell of a car! I'm glad you're going to be able to get it on the road again.

I did yes, it is an import, but when the first engine let go, that decision was made for me.

I accepted long ago that I would not be selling except in the event of some unforeseen reason, so the effect on the value was of little concern.

I have all the bits to retrun it to standard if necessary but the quality of the conversion has been so high that I think I could sell the car as is if necessary without much trouble.

I have receits to the value of the mods, but haven't given that side of things much thought.

The project was done for me and I intend to enjoy it for as long as life allows me to.

Adam,
Great to finally see pics of the car on here, i've popped over to 22b every now and then to check up on progress, and thankfully it's now getting there, awesome efforts from all, and I totally agree with your statement 'The project was done for me and I intend to enjoy it for as long as life allows me to'
That how it should be all of the time, life is short, enjoy it while you can eh!!!

Lets all keep everything crossed that after all this time and effort it's worth the wait!!!

Enjoy.

Ron.

ps, you might want to put a few more jubilee clips on as well as a few wires!!!!

You're a brave man!
Are you sticking with the standard gearbox and ratios?
Am I right in thinking the JDM's had lower gearing?
Do you have any idea of the expected 0-60, 0-100, 1/4 mile times etc?

lol,

we are well aware of the jubilee clip situation, there is a lot more to go to finally sort things, those included.

Water header tank is just in an "allow it to drive" position.

Air injectors and some others things need doing.

Gearbox is not standard is a PAR synchro with pretty much UK ratios.

No idea of performance figures, but sub 8 0-100 would be nice. and Sub 11 quarters would also be nice but is unlikely withour reducing weight.

That looks good. Interesting Bhp figure too
What induction kit is that?

The induction kit is just a Lateral Performance supplied item. Its a spun ally tube with the largest K and N that would fit on the end.

This one are intended for use with their up and down pipes which are sold for use with the garret gt and gt-r turbos but I think they do them for all kinds of turbo sizes and angles.

My and up and downpipe clocks the turbo through 45 degrees. The compressor outlet then goes under the inlet manifold meaning you don't have to find room for the 4inch intake pipe under there!

My set up was one of the first to do this and isn't actually the lateral kit but a custom made arrangement, as lateral didn't stock these items at the time.

Sadly it means that should I switch to a 6 speed in the future (which I am not keen on doing unless I have to) then I will have to switch to the lateral kit (either 2.5 or 2 inch uppipe, not sure yet) as it was made with the 6 speed box in mind.

Adam, but it was modeled on the lateral prototype which was around 4 years or so ago

Looking nice though.. cant wait to pick holes in it, in the flesh..

errr, no it wasn't modelled on the lateral prototype, it was installed according to what was asked for in terms of turbo location, with a carte blanche for the peoploe making it.

They screwed up at first making it on a much steeper angle than the turbo core were happy with. Thanks to mark for pointing this out to me when I showed him the pictures!

If you want to put the turbo there, there isn't much choice of what you can do!

Also my waste gate rejoins the down pipe.

Ill disagree by if you want to put the turbo there, there isnt much you can do..

I think Im in a better position to comment!!!

I made my exhaust myself.. you said I want my turbo there..

Eitherway thanks to mark for the inspiration

Would like to see pics of where your W/G rejoins..

david, I have those pics already from when it was installed.

Last time I checked your email address it wasn't up and running. pm me on here or via 22b.com and I can send you what pics I do have!

You have to trust me that the return is at 45 degrees to the direction of flow of the downpipe, i doesn't look like it from the pictures.

Thats another thing I have to thank mark for.

When they built the original pipework with the turbo at 45 degrees, the original rejoin was at 90 degrees and Mark immediately insisted I get it changed due to the turbulent effect it would have on the main stream of exhaust through the turbine.

New pink badge goes on grille tonight and brackets for fitting new fogs arrive tomorrow.

Those together should give me at least another 45bhp!

magic 600bhp would be nice. I ownt he bits to do it, except the *****!

Lateral gave me the option of running a 0.63 or 0.82 exhaust housing with the GT35R, I think with one other change and the guts to do it it would make 600, but I am not really interested in trying at the expense of the engine.

As stated above, I have no idea how long it will last at 500+lbft.

I could be tempted to bring it down to 450lbft but still run it up to 600bhp. I am not going to know until it is running at full strength how I would really like the power curve.

It was mapped on the dyno so woudl be a shame to waste that by changing many things. I have done that to some extent already by changing the headers. I suppose I used the dyno to give me a good base map and make sure the engine is run in and sounding clean.

any further power figures will be rolling road produced so will be open to interpretation as much as any previous ones are. That said knowing what it definitely made on the dyno it will be interesting to see how far out the rollers are in comparison.

will post up after I have been to power engineering some time.

Adam,
if you felt so inclined, you could post up when you're going to Power Engineering, who knows, you might get an audience!!!

Am not really into centre of attention stuff. This post is here because I wanted to thank those who deserve some recognition for getting the car to this point.

But it is flattering that you think that!

Great job.

Would love to see this car in the flesh one day. Hopefully I'll see it at a car meet some time.

haven't been to a meet in years. Do they still happen?

I have a friend who runs a pub in greater london/essex with a decent sized car park. Would be a great place to get some people together.

it fired last night for the first time since fitting in the car.

Noise was fanastic, massive garrett turbo really sounds amazing, even at idle. Fuel pumps weren't obtrusive and a nice flat four burble despite tubular headers

It wasn't as loud as we expected yet it was reverbarating inside the garage of my terraced house (town house) at 2 am, so we decided to kill it sharpish!

Very pleased but a lot of details need to be sorted to make it drivable.

EG. the wastegate needs to be plumbed in as opposed to all gas flow being forced through the turbine!

Also need to relocate water header tank, refit washer fluid bottle, fit some more jubilees should we accidentally make some boost, and connect up the power steering pump!

Adam,

I saw on another post you were looking for a 'T' piece so you could keep the OEM oil pressure sensor. Did you obtain a 'T' piece and have you managed to fit it?

Just wondering if there was space behind the alternator to do this or have you had to re-locate the 'T' piece away from where the sender is originally fitted.

p.s. Cracking car and project BTW.

Damian.

Damian,

well remembered.

Never fitted T piece. I wasn't necessary as there were several other locations in which all the sensors could be fitted with their own gallery access hole.

The standard oil pressure switch has not been refitted, but the oil pressure gauge indicates that there is certainly some kind of oil pressure and the primer pump is making all the right noises. On top of this the standard oil pressure switch is switched way too low to be in a position to save the engine
