Default Subaru Impreza GC8 Rally Car Build

Hi Guys,
Just joined the forum as you guys are the experts with subarus.

I've recently bought a subaru impreza gc8 1995 car with a fully welded in roll cage in it, i also have bought a 1995 subaru impreza gc8 donor car. The plan is to merge them into a rallycar, Im wanting it to be group A and just build it up as I go along. Hope you enjoy m

Here's how the project is so far. (Hope you guys can see the photos i've put them on the same way I do on British rally forum)

This is the rolling shell with the cage in..

This is the donor car. Its surprisingly clean but has a cracked head as its pressuring the water system.

So i've already got some 50mm Prodive Bilstein front struts to go on

I've also got a question on gearboxes, I know everyone says go 6 speed. But Elite racing transmissions do a dogbox for a 5 speed so I was thinking of enevtually putting one of them in. Has anyone used one of these boxes? Also wanted to know how easy it is to get LSD front and rear for the 5 speed set up.

Thanks in Advance

Dan

Dont use a 5 speed you will regret it ,its not the gears but the casings that are weak ,I've run Subaru rally cars for well over 10 years now ,so have a bit of experience .Good luck in your new venture .

Sorry I haven't updated this in a while been very busy at work and so on...

So the car is now fully stripped inside and in the engine bay, the rear subframe has all been slacked so I can just drop it straight off.
Managed to have a weekend on the car and I've got all the mastic off ready to seem weld it next weekend.
I've also commited to a buying a moderna dog box with front plated diff and DCCD, full rear subframe setup with plated rear diff and fully adjustable tein suspension.
Hopefully get some photos uploaded later on.

where in the NE are you, we are based just near the 'Angel' and stock/supply all sorts of engine parts, oils, brake & chassis components, etc. as well as undertaking various engineering & fabrication projects............

on a side note, very un-common to have a cracked head??

I'm just on the outskirts of Darlington so about half an hour off the angel, might pop up one weekend and have a look in if that's okay? I'll be in need of all sorts of bits during the course of the build, as well as advice. The plan is to do gravel but do a few odd Tarmac events when I can afford Tarmac suspension.

Sorry for the very very poor updates on here, with it been Christmas and have been very busy at work I'm finding it hard to get weekends to work on the subaru, I'm also still rallying the 205 which makes it even harder as every weekend I have free is spent on that. Going foward the 205 is now for sale so we should start to get things moving. The car itself is one weekends work away from being painted, it's now fully seem welded, has the sill tube jackin points fitted, seat rails fitted. All that's left to do is weld the seat belt mounting points in, weld some nuts back on that the bolts sheared in (trailing arms) and a few other bits and bobs. I've now also managed to get hold of a tilton twin plate competition cluth and billet flywheel along with obp motorsport pedal box and swirl pots. This weekend I will get some photos of our progress on to the forum along with more updates. Sorry for not keepin on top of it going foward I shall.
Cheers
Dan

My mate dave went through several 5 speed boxes rallying before he bought a 6. He has just changed motors and has a 5 speed dog box in a 6 speed casing. Should be bullet proof. Geared to do 115 max. Cant wait to see it shift.

I've heard a lot of people complaining about the 5 speed, but after speaking to my mate Arron newby at teg sport he said he can count on one hand the amount of times they've had someone complain about they're 5 speed moderna dog box so thats why I've gone down that route

I Have some well awaited pictures and updates!

I've Had two good weekends working on the car, It's been like Christmas this week the amount of parts i've been receiving, I've managed to get hold of a full set of V3 STI complete heads, Also got some 1.5mm aluminium sheet to make the rear bulkhead, some 20 gauge steel plate for patching holes up, some sealed rivets and washers to fit the rivets to seal up smaller holes in the shell, a 12 gallon alloy fuel tank from Ralloy, a Roof Scoop and underseal and so on for protection. My first job was patching all the big holes in the floor were the standard brake and fuel lines went through.

I've Also done the same in the boot, removing the spare wheel holder.

After Patching all the holes up the next job was aligning and fitting the brackets to hold the fuel tank in place.

We've also been thinking of how and where we can mount the swirl pot and fuel pumps, As we will be carrying a spare wheel vertically in the back we thought it would look pretty good using the spare wheel cut out in the tank.

I've also managed to get all the brackets off from underneath the car, the plan is to get them shotblasted and then to powder coat them, it helps that we have a powder coating plant at work The plan is to get everything else finished for the end of easter weekend so I can get it sent away to be painted!

Hey man, looks to be a awesome build you have going on there, I am slowly building a an 01 Coupe myself, mines stripped down currently and in the process of needing rust repair bodywork and paintjob. I am going to be doing a fuel cell myself and really like this one you have here, any link to where to get one of these would be most appreciated. Thanks and good luck with the build!!!

looks like it's going to be a very nice car when done

I've broken 3 6speed's in my rally car, snapped selector fork every time, I havn't found anywhere that makes stronger selector forks and I'm fed up of it breaking so I'm just going to bite the bullet and go for a sequential
