Default Classic Wrx Track Toy Project

So, it's been over a year since I last owned a scoob and the bug has bit me again!

I decided I wanted a cheap track toy and had been actively searching for a reasonably priced and spec'd clio 182, but then stumbled across this which was only 2 miles from my work...

https://www.scoobynet.com/subaru-444...5-wrx-jdm.html

So after a quick chat with Maz a deposit was promptly paid and he kindly dropped the car off at my work where it has sat ever since. Here she is...

The car already has a good starting spec, some of which includes....

17" speedline ST2 with nearly new toyo proxys
4 pot callipers with updated discs
Braided hoses
Tein coil overs with EDDC in car adjustable
Front strut brace
Full turbo back decated 3" exhaust
Sti uppipe
Sti alloy arms
Momo steering wheel
New age wrx interior
V4 mid level spoiler
Front lip spoiler
Sti alloy bonnet
Splash guards/spats

However, these where the good parts, the main bad part being the noisey engine due to a worn thrust bearing, so this will be the biggest job that needs rectifying.

Overall the car is very solid throughtout and in good overall condition considering it's year, but I need to also tidy it up as I go along.

I don't ever intend this car to run silly power or be a world beater, I'm just looking for a nice reliable track/fast road car running between 350-400bhp. So I'm lucking for your advice what to do engine wise?

1. Rebuild the existing with forged internals and Sti heads in affect future proofing the engine?
2. New age 2.0 or 2.5 block, as I'm only looking for 350-400bhp?

I'm sure number 2 would be the cheapest but welcome your thoughts, comments or even better suggestions?

I would go for the second option not only is it cheaper but the block itself will be slightly newer.
As for whether 2.0 or 2.5, I would personally go down the 2.0 route to save the hassle of forging the 2.5. The 2.0 will handle that power easily and if you ever want 500+ all you have to do is forge/stroker it to a 2.1 displacement.

You may also want to include a 6 speed, bigger brakes, upgraded suspension, etc if you are not already aware .

Subaru Collector 555.

Good point re the 2.5!, I'm definitely of fan of a cheaper option too!

Brakes are a defo, front and rear upgrade planned.

Already has the tein coilovers which I had on my last hawkeye so happy with those! But I've already started collecting some additional suspension parts...

Rear strut brace and whiteline 22m rear anti roll bar and uprated rear drop links!

Both need a good clean up, but that's part of the fun!

And because they where a bargain, a set of bucket seats with custom impress mountings/rails with a set of 4 point harnesses...

The rear of the seats where quite badly scratched and the white leather was discoloured and had seen better days, so these were my first refurb job. To start, matt black refurb on the rears...

Then it was on to the white leather cushions. Not a fan of the white leather so had these recovered in black cloth fabric, here's the finished result...

Much better in my opinion plus look like new now!

And again, another bargain I couldn't resist, carbon fibre v6 rear spoiler. Not sure if this will make it's way on to the car but time will tell...

Another one drew !
Just go newage sti bottom end and sti3/4 heads.
I ran 503 on brina 2 so by far the best option for the output you're looking for pal.
If you need anything just give us a buzz

I'd get a bottom end off matty b in the traders section pal and source some heads out of the classifieds.
Arp headstuds and some decent headgaskets and build it up.
Have you considered management ?

Would I have to go with the v3 heads? Could I just go for a complete new age long motor with standard heads?

No real thought to management as yet, my first priority will be just to get it up and running in standard form. Then on to turbo injectors management etc. With it being an early car, presume it will need a complete new standalone management system?

If you went for a complete long motor it would either need a syvecs/alcatek or you could source the engine loom and use a newage ecu.

In regards to keeping your current ecu, that is also and option using an ESL board but would mean sticking to classic heads

V3 or 4 sti heads drew would be the best bet drew, I have a complete engine including loom from a widetrack blob sti sat in my ra atm, unfortunately it's not as simple as just banging in a newage loom banny far from it in fact.
Syvecs or alcatek would be an option to run full newage but quite costly in terms of management.
Esl is by far the best cost effective option as banny stated above and runs lots of nice features now as well.
Only thing it cannot do is run avcs but with earlier heads it would be a very nice setup.
Hth

Could I not run a new age long engine with avc heads on a apexi ecu? Or does it have to be alcatec/syvecs?

I like the idea of just dropping in a complete new age long motor with the standard wrx manifold/injectors etc purely for ease and cost if possible?

If not then looks like new age short motor with v2/3 heads and ESL ecu. Where's the best place to get hold of the ESL ecu?

Sorry for all the questions! Ha
