Generally because it is a more accurate method of identifying the car especially if as in the case of Scoobynet there are people viewing from other countries to whom a UK registration letter would be "gobbledygook".
The other reason is that even non import cars are sometimes stocked for long periods of time before being sold therefore the registration letter does not necessarily tally with the year of manufacture. e.g. a car manufactured in June may not get registered till Feb of the following year and there is always the possibility of a model change in between these times.
