Yea tbh car would have been better with no L/c to be honest and just a gd left foot.

An yea be up again next year be good to see what that engines like as its what i would want if i were to build one.

Was it yourself who built it ?

I wasnt arguing about times.

It was about the spool of the cheaper turbos.

My point was how its an unfair comparison no ??

His forged 2.5 high comp engine would prop do a decent time with no turbo. (Joke).

Standard 2.0 wrx heads and cams on my 2.5, you have a big advantage with Avcs. Maybe I'm making more power than I think 😜

Yeah I threw it together in my shed. I run megasquirt ecu too, that I have mapped myself on the road. 😬

More racing excuses from mee but if you look at the issues ive been posting about my avcs ive prob not had it in a long time. Only recently sorted it. Lol.

I hope i didnt have it but id swap my heads for your bottom end anyday lolol

Only recently started logging myself.

Been looking at the mapping side of things too but not that brave yet lol

Al get the bits and throw me one together then we can compare turbos fairly....

It's a dangerous game, one that I have been playing for 12 years.
Broken a few engines in the past, its all a learning curve.
The advantage of mapping your own car is you can push it harder than a mapper will be preparer to (on the grounds of reliability and their reputation).

What ever happened to the fella who's arse dyno thought his Kinugawa turbo was making massive power yet when put on the rollers it spooled like the QE2 and made about 50bhp? He then went on to blame everything including global warming, brexit and his broken foot as to why it was so poor....

lol I remember that thead, you can't blame the tubro entirely though without seeing his car. As I mentioned earlier I had bother with my inlet pipe causing a big restriction.
Cam timing could be out, valve clearances could be tight, actuator not tight, choked air filter, etc etc. Sometimes the best turbo in the world can't account for an underlying fault with the setup...

Marmite on toast and tea! What an awesome combination, glad I'm not the only one who does that :thumb:

I just spend over £2k on parts alone building a forged 2.5, if I thought it necessary to spend a grand on a turbo I would of done so. But it's just not required.
I would like to know what exact components of my turbo you think are holding it back? I've ran almost a whole second quicker over the 1/4 than someone with an sc42 in an sti with Avcs, making 397hp. It's working for me 😉

Well i went back and took a good chunk of time 0.9 of a second off my previous times as i says all down to the launch control setup.

Now switched to carberry and the times dropped

Still on a stock bottom end tho so fingers crossed

Forgot about this thread until it just popped up on a search. So thought I’d give my summary…

Kinugawa TD05-18G with 12 blade billet compressor. 7cm housing, performance thrust bearing.
EJ20 stock internals.
440cc injectors @ 1.2 Bar = 334 BHP / 312 ft-lb
850cc injectors @ 1.5 Bar = 379 BHP / 355 ft-lb

I’ll scan and post the graphs soon.

Slightly longer story for those interested to read it….
My friend Andy & I bought a tatty 145k mile MY99 Turbo 2000 from a guy in our village at the end of 2016.
It already had headers & turbo back exhaust plus a remap by ZEN (285 BHP I think)
Well we decided to turn it into a track toy and among lots of other mods fitted the turbo above. I did actually order a 9 blade compressor though!

Had it mapped by Duncan of RaceDynamix at RCM early in 2017.
With a 1.2 bar WG spring we were actually seeing up to 20-21PSI/1.4 Bar on the gauge. But only 1.3 bar on the dyno’s sensor.
It made 334 BHP & 312 ft-lb. Although we think our BOV was leaking slightly at the top end.
We ran it like this for about 2000 miles of road & track during 2017.
Managed a 13.0s 1/4 mile time too.

The only trouble was a hot misfire at high RPM. Fixed by converting to newage coil on plug set up.

Over last winter we made a few more mods (injectors, up-pipe & thermal inlet spacers) and decided to put a 1.5 bar WG spring in.
Remap again by Duncan at Surrey Rolling Road in April road it made 379/355 with slightly earlier spool too. Great!
Interestingly again our gauge gave higher readings that the dyno print out. Gauge max = 26PSI/1.8bar. Dyno = 21.5psi / 1.475bar max

Sadly the turbo failed on the first trackday after the remap. Intercooler totally full of oil by lunchtime :(
Had only done about 200 miles after the rolling road.

Its worth noting we had also changed the BOV springs to a 23-30PSI set for the 1.5bar set up. This was causing turbo flutter on lift and I wonder if that aided in the turbo’s demise. But with a weaker BOV spring it would lurch between 1st & 2nd gear due to losing too much pressure (I’m guessing?)

We’ve now bought a used AFP TD05-20g that I’ll get rebuilt and hopefully will be able to make similar power at lower boost
I’ll also get the kinugawa rebuilt and sell it on soon.

Feel free to add your thoughts and point out anything I might be missing!
