problems with stage 2 competition clutch

hi mike ,i've jst spoke to you regarding my stage 2 clutch i bought from scooby bits .
my name is Richard Spregg ,i run a garage in stockport and have been working on subarus for some years now .
i fitted a stage 2 clutch to my car in may 2011 and straight away noticed a herific judder , something ive never experienced in 25 years of trading , it was that bad that when changing down gears at normal driving conditions the exhaust would bang repeatatly on the rear bumper.
the judder is still noticeable at slow moving traffic now even after covering 3000 miles on the clutch.

the reason why i'm getting in touch now is that over the past few weeks i've noticed when pressing the pedal i'm getting a creaking noise from the bell housing area and the pedal is very very stiff and getting stiffer as time goes by.

i rang scooby bits the day after fitting the clutch to report the judder and they told me to email comp clutch to report it which i did , they said it would take 500 miles to bed in , it took 1500 miles to get 90% better but never been right .
just to note my type is a push type clutch fitted to my 2006 wrx subaru.

after speaking to you you mentioned about taking clutch out and emailing you pics , which is not really a option for me as i use the car daily to travel to and from work and is my only car , and don't want to go down the route of hiring a car ...

i can understand where your coming from when you say under your warranty you need to see clutch . but from my experience , your not going to tell if the pressure plate springs are at fault just by looking at them..

i bought this clutch as i wanted it to last longer than standard , i paid £780 for the kit and did'nt mind paying it as i thought it would last .. to be fare its not lasted as long as my standard one which was in from new and i covered 35k....

please can you help in any way you can to resolve this ..

just to ad my car is a advertisement to my company to show other customers what i can do to impreza's, theres no way i could fit one of these clutchs and give it back to them as mine feels..

sorry to say but these clutchs are **** i had one a few years back and it jdder all the way and i give a good 2000 miles as well and when i took my car to the old 350hp mark it slip , there was an old thread on here about them, and i cant belive api sell this tat as david at api after breaking two of his uprated exceedy clucthes thought about offering me one of these peices of sH!t

you'd think reading up on them they'd be the dogs ! oh well we learn by our mistakes.
i searched for a uprated clutch for some time , fitted plenty of pull type before , but as mine is a push type i struggled to find a uprated one, so thats why i went for the competition clutch brand....

You can get a converter for your car so you can use the puul clutches. My mate is running a 500/500 2.5 and he swears by his cc clutch. I was going to get one as well but due to poor customer service from the places that supply these I've ended up with an exedy twin. It still amazes me the number of shops that can't be arsed phoning you back,

i tka eit you go the flywheel as well for that money you could have had a ap -helix or one of scooby clinics extreme clutchesyou should be chasing thme down for your money back

yes got the fly wheel with it , which goes to add at 2500 rpm to 2000rpm on when slowing down the gaers i get a vibrating noise which i'm led to belive its the flywheel causing the noise .... oh the joys!!

We have been supplying and fitting Comp Clutches for over 18 months now and never yet had a problem with one.

We even had a friction disc on its own from Mike at Comp Clutch, free of charge to ' try ' as it had been rejected by another tuner as juddery. It went in one of our cars and was perfect, no judder, no smell.

They can be a bit ' prompt ' until bedded in, but once done are very strong,

Danny Clarke has one of their Ceremetallic single plate paddle clutches in his drag car making 654 hp and running 10.9 seconds. That's and advert of quality all on its own.

I have no problem in recommending them as good value.

Just to add my 2 pence to this:

I was one of the first Uk customers to put (try to put) a Competition Clutch in my Spec C approx 2.5 years ago. It was a sorry saga :( Back then (not sure if they have changed the design now) the 6 speed, 6 puck paddle clutch did not work with a std flywheel. They only found out after I had the clutch put in and found out the hard way. I then had to pay to have this clutch removed & then pay the garage again to put in an Exedy Pink clutch. So unfortunately I had to pay the labour charges twice.

Throughout the whole saga while my car was stuck on the garages ramps I was in contact with Mike who for almost 3 months kept pretending to have done the refund or was just about to, or said he had but wasn't showing on my statement. Basically trying to wait till 3 months after the initial transaction when it becomes harder to get your money back through the credit card company. In the end after getting in contact with the credit card company, getting a written report by the garage & the credit card company passing it over to an independent expert, -they decided it was not fit for use & was mis-sold and they refunded the cost of the clutch by force. For all the above I have still got correspondence from Mike @ Competition Clutch & MBNA credit card company.

Whether they have changed their design etc is irrelevant to me as receiving this kind of customer service from the main UK agent supplier is shocking. If you know whats good just stick to known brands such as Exedy, ACT, AP Racing etc

I had an API supplied C.C. Stg.2 fitted in Sep 2011, together with an API lightened OEM flywheel -- reporting no problems here. All is dandy.

It wasn't even recalcitrant at the beginning - felt, and still does feel, like OEM.

i find it hard to belive its a stage 2 organic one as mine and eveyr one else stage 2 was shocking dude unless they have change who make them now or somthing becuas ethat stage 2 could not cope with my car when it was at 340hp,

I can only report what my car is doing. :S

It defo is a S2 - as I needed it to be able to handle at least 400lb ft. Plus, it was all discussed with David beforehand, etc.

Did you buy their - or a - lightened flywheel at the same time though?

i purchased form there cc but well im glad it works for you dude but im sticking to my ap clutch as that seems to be doing the job : >

How much was your AP clutch kit? (AP Racing make pukka gear.) :)

i got it at trade price aoprund the 450 mark i belive but my garage felt sorry or me after breakign four of these so called 400 hp clutches and they only charge me 3 hours labour at 40 an hour not 4-5 liek some of these compnays lol any one who take four to five hours changing a classic subaru cluthc is having far to many tea breaks ; >

its there top sinlge plate organic clutch i think they only rated it on the box at about 340ft but then its like the helix one they only rate them at 380ft, as all the big compnays will say they have to put somthing on it, the like of roger clakre engine tuner have use both cluthcs on car running 450 as long as you not launching then and have some deegree of sympathy they will last a couple of years which is all i need. to get at least two years out of it dude, mine cam from roger clakre so it least i now its the proper goods but my garge deal with them and get good prices liek most of them onhere probally do, its all about weather there pass the good deal on to there customers once in a while, but then in all fairness i have spent about 8 grand or more at my garage : >

Yeah, in reality the clutches tend to handle a whole lot more torque than what's stated (as long as you don't unsympathetically abuse 'em).

Ergo, the companies have to cover themselves, hence them building in significant headroom to their stated bhp or lb ft figure. :thumb:

don't overlook the ACT clutches, quite a few high powered cars using them, and at a decent price too ! Mines taking everything i can throw at it and the minimum amount of torque its seen is 460 ft lbs ! Now nearing the end of its second year, it feels the same as it did when it was brand new.

I'll prob. consider an ACT instead of AP next then LOL!

i cant remember the exact model but its rated to 565ft/lbs single plate for a 6 speed, try bren@apex on here or you can try importing from America, possibly cheaper providing you don't get stung for import duty
