Default ACT clutch and flywheels

We have been dealing with ACT clutches for years now. They have proven themselves to be extremely reliable and durable and the torque figures they claim have been nothing but 100% accurate.

The Subaru kits are a five piece package with cover, plate, release bearing, alignment tool and spigot bearing.

The HD kits use a lighter cover than the XT so have a lighter pedal. The XT has a higher clamping force so is capable of handling more torque but they do have a heavier pedal feel.

The organic kits use a normal type disc with the smoothest engagement.

The paddle plates will handle a higher torque figure but have less progressive bite.

There are four types of paddle plates:

- 4 puck sprung
- 6 puck sprung
- 4 puck solid
- 6 puck solid

We have always sold the paddles with solid centres and have never had an issue but the sprung centre is designed to give the drivetrain an easier time and be quieter in operation.

Thanks

We had another shipment come in the other day with a stack of ACT catalogues to send out to our trade customers but Ive set the retail price is so low that theres no margin to offer trade discount so the catalogues are nigh on useless.

Im after a clutch for my 2004 wrx 5 speed.

Gearbox is coming out soon due to 4th gear syncro problem and PPG gear set is going in.

I am still on the original clutch and after 39k miles and a dozen trackdays I think it would be advisable to change it while the gearbox is out.

Car is running 330/330 and is mainly used for trackdays.

What are the advantages of the 4/6pad clutches?

Which would be best suited to my car? (flywheel too?)

Hi,

For track days you are not launching so you won't need the paddle clutch.

The SB3-HDSS HD organic WRX EJ20 93-05 V1-9 JDM £539.00 430lb/ft clutch kit will be fine and also hold the power you require.

Regards, Jason

If you are running upto 550lb/ft of torque then the SB4 XTSS is the one to go for. If you are running 550lb/ft or more then you need to step up to the SB4-HDG6. Dont over spec the clutch unless you are going to hammer the car in launches. If you want to launch hard then go for a paddle and go for one torque rating higher than youll be running.

Paddle plates are better equipped with dealing with hard lanuches than organic plates BUT you dont want to go for a paddle unless you need to as the engagement is sharper than an organic and you can get a much lower life with a paddle than organic depending on your driving styel. Paddles dont like being slipped so if you do a lot of town driving, stop start or hill strats then try to avoid the paddle.

If its just a fast road toy then its no such an issue.

hi bren looking to order one of these from you in next few weeks, was just wondering whats the main difference with the SB4-XTSS and the SB4-HDG6, cars a blob 6 speed STI running a forged 2.5 with around 500/500, its mainly a road car but will do a handful of 1/4 runs per year, which should i go for? cheers- Stu

SB4 XTSS Xtreme Org WRX STI EJ20 02-05 V8-9 JDM £629.00 565lb/ft
SB4-HDG6 HD 6pad sprung WRX STI EJ20 02-05 V8-9 JDM £549.00 660lb/ft

The XTSS uses a high clamping force cover with an organic plate. It means that the pedal will be stiff to press but the bite will be nice and progressive and the clutch will have a long lifespan.

The HDG6 uses a cover with a lower clamping force menaing the pedal will be lighter and easier to press but uses a paddle plate meaning the biting point will be sharper and if you slip the clutch a lot then the life will be much shorter than the equivilent organic

If you are drag racing then Id go for the paddle as they are much better equipped at handling hard starts and you arent far off the torque capabilities of the XTSS.

If you want OEM feel then you want the SB4-HDSS HD organic WRX STI EJ20 02-05 V8-9 JDM £599.00 515lb/ft. However the torque capabilities are too close to what you are running for comfort.

This is more suitable but will have a heavier pedal than stock:

SB4 XTSS Xtreme Org WRX STI EJ20 02-05 V8-9 JDM £629.00 565lb/ft

Are you going to be doing any hard launches, drag racing or just hard starts from traffic lights?

Note that we have a batch of the Exedy twin plate clutches that we have on special at the moment. They retail at £1850+, I can do them at a very special £1199.

They sound expensive compared to single plate clutches but remember that they include a flywheel. The price on the link below is plus vat.

Am I right in thinking that the parts are interchangeable Bren ?
I have the xtreme sprung 6 puck but as I seem to be using the car more on the school run etc your comments about them wearing quickly are worrying me a little so I was thinking of swapping out the paddle plate for an organic . If this is possible , would you be able to supply the organic plate seperately ?

Cheers
Dan

Yes the parts are interchangeable. The paddles wear faster if you drive them like an organic and slip them a lot. If you just let the clutch engage fully to get the car rolling then give the car throttle to pull off properly then they arent too bad.

However theres no question that the organic is nicer to drive day to day.

The organic plate alone is £174.
