Audi S1 announced. Do I cancel Golf?
http://www.pistonheads.com/news/defa...?storyId=29413
Well, well, well. I've waited and waited for this car to be announced. I got bored of rumours satying it was canned. Rumours saying it would be FWD. Rumours saying it would be DSG only.
What have we got? AWD & Manual gearbox.
This after I've ordered a new Golf GTI with Performance Pack.
Do I cancel the Golf or the S1?
Thoughts?

Just been reading about this on pistonheads,
Ok the Audi will be able to put it power down better in wet weather and damp roads.
I've not been in a Audi A1 so no idea how much room they have inside, not sure if this is an issue for you or not ?
I will guess the residual value after 3 years will be better on the Audi than the VW, but the Audi extras will be more expensive.

Does nothing for me, too small. And probably won't be as quick as it should be.
Golf GTi a far better car.
But given a choice of all available, the new Golf R gets my vote.

Because it's so small, it's a car for young rich kids /or with wealthy parents.
Also, double duel exhaust exits on a car that small looks like overkill to me. I'm sure it's a fantastic car though and the manual gear box is a nice option.

Can't believe so many folk say it's a girls car!
There used to be a time, a small hatchback with a turbo fitted, was the dogs D's.
I've went on for years, the perfect car for everything, is a small, 4WD, turbo'd motor and this is pretty much it. Top build quality and I'm sure, it'll have great reliability and residuals too. If i had the money and it has DSG, I'd be all over it. AFAIK the Polo R will have the DSG, but I doubt it'll keep it's value as well...

DSG would ruin it. (or Definetly Sh*t Gearbox as I prefer to call it ), and FWD woudl just make it yet another run of the mill hot hatch with a big turbo.
But this quote sounds promising :
Like the A1 Quattro the S1 runs a six-speed manual, not the compulsory seven-speed dual-clutch of the 1.4 TFSI.
Must say if both will be available with AWD and manual box with three doors, then I reckon it would makes the Golf R even more pointless than it is of current. I call the Golf R a Golf GTi AWD with a daft pricetag...as thats what it essentially is IMO....but I'm biased as I'm a die hard VR6 fan. I was never a fan of the Golf GTi either due to FWD
I'm toying between a Fiesta ST or a BMW M135i....Whats stopped me is I think I'll be left yearning for the traction again everytime I want to hoof it out of a busy junction on a wet road. ....this car could be the answer.

It looks pretty useful to me as long as Audi can make it handle (miracles can happen).
Ali - just test both. The M135i has rather trick tyres and they grip like hell. You have to be silly to break traction even in the wet - but if you want to play, it's fun. The precision and directness of a RWD car is impossible to beat even with the most trick AWD system.
An example is STi vs M135i… Note - it does NOT have a double clutch gearbox as stated, it's a full auto (ZF 8 speed!) and knocks spots off a DSG box.

Have to agree with F1, but i'd also say he was more used to the BMW having had extra time in it driving it on the road the day before, he also mentions that it takes a bit of getting used to the Subaru not having driven one for a while.
Same power and torque with transmission losses of somewhere in the region of 15/20% and 50kg heavier it's no real surprise that the BMW would fair better on a dry track.
That said though the M135i is a very impressive package and no doubt more reliable than the chocolate 2.5L Subaru.
If I were in the market for a car in this price range i'd be looking at the JDM versions, would be interesting to see what the outcome would be against a twin scroll with a map tweak to even the score in the power to weight / drivetrain losses departments, I think the roles would be reversed.
Then there is the 80% of the time that the roads are wet in the UK to consider too.
Edit to add; that gear box in the bimmer is a definite advantage too very slick and sweet and the sound of the engine, bloody hell i'm in danger of becoming a BMW fan, next thing you know i'll be sauntering about my local like I own the gaff.

I often go out of my way to be polite in ours (and the last one) just for the shocked expression of the "receiver." Try one if you can; you'd probably enjoy it.
