How much was that then? My mate loves old BMW's. He had a 328i which he bought for £1k and had if for just over a year but he wrote it off just last month by driving through a very deep flood. Other than that he had no problems with it and it felt fast to me when I sat in it. He now has an e36 325i which he paid £750 for.

£250? Not bad.
I sold my mum's partner's 1996 E39 528 SE for £1500 18months ago. Still see it knocking about. Not a bad tub and I've seen the owner since and he's chuffed to bits with it and hasn't spent a penny on it.
Meanwhile in that space of time the 2002 e39 530i Msport it was replaced with cracked a radiator end tank then the outlet on the header tank broke off on reassembly (plastic had gone brittle), then the battery died and alternator regulator packed in. Nothing expensive or hard to fix, but its just ironic that the older e39 is still chugging along and cost nothing to run in the same space of time But it does go, drive, and handle so much better than the old 528, which was a bit of a floaty old barge by the time it was sold. This one is still feel fresh to drive (not hit enough potholes yet )
Watch out for rust on the rear jacking points and sills - catch it early and get it welded+rustproofed as it goes from the inside out.
Also wheel wobble when braking is amplified by sloppy lower front tie-arm bushings and wear in the track rod ends. Just saying that as you can fix the brakes and it can still do it (especially when braking from motorway speeds and cruising at 40-50mph)
