Default citroen dispatch van starting problem

hi all, I have a 1.9 turbo diesel dispatch. had problems with it starting in cold weather so I changed the glow plugs, it seemed to make a bit of difference but not perfect. now im having trouble when its been running a while and its turned off its hard to start up again. the light for glow plugs either goes off straight away when cold or doesn't come on at all when its hot. when hot its tries to fire up but doesn't quite get going, have to leave it a few mins and try again. soon gets going but a real struggle. can anyone help and point me in the right direction? cheers, john.

Have you checked that the glowplug relay is working?

Have you had the van plugged in and checked for any fault codes? This would be my first port of call.

What he said

The glow plug relay burn out for a past time on these, usually due to failing glow plugs

if you find the relay and turn it upside down you will find the terminal melted in the housing

cheers for that guys. ive heard people also talk about just disconnecting the battery for 30 mins to reset something. just rubbish? the van starts pretty much ok when its cold and the glow plug light comes on, if it was the relay would it not have the problem all the time?

Depends mate, worth a check anyway. If no luck, get it plugged in to check for fault codes. Disconnecting the battery will not erase these.
If you were closer i'd do a diagnostics test on it for you.

What engine? Is its a common rail DW10 or the older XUD?

If you don't know: The engine code is the 6th, 7th and 8th digits in the chassis number.

If its a common rail, then I'm saying its likely to be air in teh fuel system. Probably from a leaky fuel filter housing o-ring. Quite a common problem...notably after the filter has been changed as some of the filter housings are a bit of **** (there's about three different designs).

On common rail DW10s the engine will not start until the ECU sees adequate fuel pressure in the rail. It will not log a fault code unless cranking time is excessive or fuel pressure is too low during engine running.

Glow plugs shouldn't make much difference on these engine in this weather, maybe in winter, but not at the moment. When the engine is warm glow plugs are not needed at all. For example even the manky old XUD in our 206 van which has half dead glow plugs manages to start without hesitation in summer (different story in winter).

Again on common rail DW10s , the other likely issue is a injector leaking through the spill pipes. This will cause hot start issues too. A leak back test on the spill pipes of each injector will show up a failing injector....the one on its way out will **** out with fuel.

Other possible faults could be crank/cam sensor faults, but I'd rule out the above first.

Hi, I have a 1.9 diesel 05 non turbo that was hard to start and now wont start unless it is jumped, but once it's been started after that starts fine until the next day, someone said it would be the starter motor, but I thought if that was the case it would be hard to start all the time, even after the initial jump start?

any ideas?

I was told 2 of the injectors were leaking. Took them out and replaced the seals. Once back together it started so I thought 'problem solved'. But it only started off the key about 5 times after that then would start at all, but would still start no problem with a bump. Then I was told it could be the starter. Changed it and still nothing. Now I've been told it might be the EGR valve. Could be either stuck open or closed. Just don't know what to do now.

What kind of fuel pump does it have? Mechanical or electronic in tank one?

Take the egr valve off and blank the holes on the manifold for it with a plate, if it starts and runs ok then its the egr at fault, you could then clean the egr, fit it again and see if that helps, if not replace it.

However i'd do as ali suggested first though as it does seem more fuel related, when was the filter last changed?

Not sure what kind of pump it has. Can it be a fuel problem though as it bump starts no problem and runs perfect once going.

not touched the van for ages now . was maybe hoping the problem would solve itself. need to get cracking on it now. anyone got any ideas what it can be. I tried getting to the egr valve, can get to 1 bolt on it but no chance to get the other. loads of others have had this problem as forums show but no one has the solution. some please help

EGR won't stop the engine from starting (even if it is faulty), it will just cause loss of power and/or exhaust smoke ...look elsewhere.

Have you had diagnostics run on it yet??

Have you replaced the fuel filter?

Have you carried out a spill off test on the injectors yet?
