I'd recommend one of these

Half the mileage and looks better if you ask me

Have a look on the ST forum, the general opinion there is that all the savings that are earned with fuel efficiency against the ST220 are soon undone putting it right again.

They certainly do. I didn't think it would be that bad cos Ford say 27mpg combined but we only just get 20mpg normally.
Had a recent 170 mile trip to Southwold and back cruising at 70 nearly the whole time and the car said we got 31.8mpg

Got any pics as they are nice looking cars in ST trim. Better than the standard new shapes anyway.

Any engine other than the 20i!!

The 330d is ace (as is the 330i); if you can stretch to one, DO IT! Spend money on the engine, NOT the M Sport extras and other options (the i-drive on that age 3 series is also cack).

The 320d is fine too but I don't like four pot diesels (even though our van has one!). The 325d is a good "halfway house" and six pot too.

Mondeo ST? Why? It's a FWD Ford. Good cars but why do people think they are at all similar to a 3 series? Different market. The petrol STs are also comically bad on fuel for just over 200bhp.

The 03 plate would be an E46 model - many love it to bits but it is a bit old now. The 55 plate is (just) the E90 model and so a fair bit more "modern" - however the newer ones came with run flats tyres which are CACK so change them ASAP! Try and get an E90 if you can.

320d is 2.0 four pot with 170-180ish bhp, 330d is a 3.0 six pot with 230ish bhp (the newer ones usually have a bit more). It sounds pretty good and goes very well indeed.

A 330d M Sport would be an ace buy if you can find one - ideal mpg/bhp ratio.

Not really. It's all about the history IMO.

The higher mileage examples are more than likely to be in better mechanical condition than lower mileage cars.
Reason being, is that the higher milers would have had more fresh oil and servicing ( possibly twice a year) rather than the little used example with an owner who thinks its ok to only change the oil every 2.5-3 years ( which its not, no matter how many lights still appear on the service indicator!)

Lower miles on an older car also suggests more short distance and driving from cold.
Not sure about electrics and suspension though, I would imagine that actual milage was the biggest infuencer.

Would the milage/age be a factor with these two or would they be too close to not matter?

On first impressions, i would go for the newer car ( particularly if i did a lower mileage each year) but would depend on the drive and condition/ service history before i made a final decision.
But saying the drive/ history was the same , newer car it would be.
