Vw Polo failed it's MOT... Brakes!!
My neighbour has an R reg VW polo which is just a runabout for his wife but it failed it's MOT this week and they would like to know if the price quoted is OTT or not? I've copied and pasted the list she sent me.
Here is the rather long list of thing that are apparently wrong with my car. Garage said approx £350-400 to repair.
Brakes failures ; RBT park brake efficiency 11%
Offside front suspension arm rubber Bush deteriorated resulting in excessive movement
Front reg plate deteriorated.
Nearside rear braking system leaking.
Offside rear braking system leaking.
Nearside rear brake recording little or no effort.
Nearside rear parking brake recording little or no effort.
Nearside rear brake pipe excessively corroded.
(Filter) fuel system component leaking.
Parking brake efficiency below requirements.

its a tuff call ,as there are not to many parts , 1 brake pipe , rear shoes and cylinders, fuel filter and number plate and suspension bush or full arm then fitting and possibly tracking
i would have said 200-250 plus mot at a rough guess

Thanks for the replies. She doesn't want to spend that sort of money on the car, it's probably not even worth that, and was going to scrap it and get another however the same garage put new front discs and pads on it in November and supposedly checked the brakes!
It's also the hassle of getting another.
I'll tell her to get a second opinion.
Thanks again.

Just take it to another garage and get them to do the work, as said you either need rear shoes and cylinders or a new piece of brake pipe putting in, that'll cost about £100 in parts at most a new fuel filter will be about £15. A new number plate will be about £15 and a new wishbone will be about £35. Labour for that should be about £100 2-3 hrs.
You're looking about £265 realistically with about another £30-50 for the mot depending what the garage charge.
Once the back breaks are sorted then you'll have above 16% recorded effort and itll pass the mot
