Out of curiosity where would you place the following in terms of brand prestige? 1 being the most prestigious and 10 being the least.
1 Alfa Romeo
2 Audi
3 BMW
4 Ford
5 Honda
6 Jaguar
7 Mercedes
8 Subaru
9 Vauxhall
10 Volkswagon

Fifth gear did a test on the public and the Jaguar came out ahead of BMW and Mercedes. For me it goes;
Mercedes
Jaguar
BMW
Audi
Alfa Romeo
Subaru
VW
Honda
Ford
Vauxhall
Mercedes
Jaguar
BMW
Audi
Alfa Romeo
Subaru
VW
Honda
Ford
Vauxhall

Officially the world's most valuable car brand is Toyota worth about $24bn according to one of the more recent global surveys. I suspect that's due to worldwide recognition.
They'd also dropped a fair bit after the accelerator issues in the US.
5t.

Are you also including worldwide, Europe only, UK only?
More parameters needed.

Surely Jaguar are well ahead if Mercedes sit in a new Jag then sit in a new Merc and the Merc feels pretty crappy in comparison and at leas Jag can build a car with an auto box that won't fail every 60k.

I used the most popular marques on here that people buy as I was curious to see what their perceptions were. I could have included Porsche but thats an obvious one and has its own rather niche market so didnt bother.

Again, we are not talking about what is actually better, purely the perception o the brand. Quite often flagship models elevate the marque, for example Ford have the ST and RS models lifting them out of ordinary, Mercedes have SLR and SLS models where as Jaguar have the occasional supercar but not as part of a regular line up.

Have you seen the XKR-S ? I can imagine that there are people who rate German taxi cabs above Jaguar but those must be people who know nothing about cars. Jag don't make ****ty little cars like the a-class or smarts like merc so if it turns out that the majority of people think Merc has more prestiege then their marketing dept has done well.

Probably that order, the top 3 were all top marques in the 30's for racing, all the way through to the 50's+ the others then came on the scene, Jaguar next, the rest are relatively new in any other sense, to top marques would be this.

That would be my opinion of perceived prestige but i doubt i'll ever buy a Bmw, Audi or VW as i don't like Bmw, they seem to be driven by ***** and Audi and VW seem to be over priced and driven by *****. All imho.

I have no idea why you put that brick wall smilie up, I am and have been aware all along about the difference between presteige and good ;I am just stating some opinions about why it annoys me that Merc can make so many average cars driven by sales reps and still be regarded as a presteige marque by many.
