Default Thinking of remapping the Fab...

I heard a few good things about this company and got me to thinking.
Both me and the Wife have Fabia VRS's (old shape diesel variety) and we do between 20k and 30k each per year. I've been swapping emails with the chap who runs it and he claims 40bhp / 75nm gains and 10% up on mpg. I'm not really fussed about the extra power (although will be nice) but more arsed about the extra mpg. He has said he would do a deal on the pair for £450 which with a 10% mpg increase would pay it self back in around 10 months and then start saving us money.
Dilemma???
Is 10% mpg increase realistic (75% of all our miles are motorway).
The wife's car only has 32k which is fine but mine has 163k and still on it's first clutch - i feel i'm tempting fate.

Experiences, thoughts????

Say goodbye to your clutch and DMF soon. LOL. A remap on those engines is superb but you will always destroy the clutch if you welly it too much........

Yep have to say from reading the various other car forums -regards the astra vxr / octavia vrs etc I dont think there are too many cars like the scooby which can comfortably handle a remap without effecting the standard clutch etc, no doubt you are a member off Briskoda website ?? if not excellent source off info on the octavia / fabia scene a host off info regards remapping.

to be honest thou if its just for fuel gains I think you should be okay as obviously your not using the extra power etc that the new map gives so would think the original clutch etc should cope okay, saying that if it does not then any fuel saving gains would soon be gone in replacing these parts !!!

Yep - on Briskoda. Has posted the same thing on there. 1 or 2 people upto press have said that mpg gains are unlikely but i'm guessing that most people map for power to use. I'm hoping someone with a fairly decent motorway commute will appear and make comment

Mapped one last month will find the graph.

Owner is saying 12mpg extra but seems a big high to me tbh.

12 MPG extra ? be nice if it was but as you say seems very ,very high and to be honest have never heard of anything near these figures being achieved on any model off car. ever mapped the petrol version off the vrs? seriously considering going for an 08 plate 2.0 petrol model and like the op would be nice to have it mapped for a bit extra on the fuel figures.

IMO...
Originals were rated at 130hp, 229lbft.
A recent remap (not mine but on Briskoda) saw unmapped at 140 and remapped at 166. Torque was 278.
The feeling seems to be that 165-170hp is reasonable for a remap. When I had mine done over at Jabbasport, I got it torque limited to preserve the clutch, which is mostly successful. I asked for 270lbft.
In theory you can achieve fuel savings, in practice it depends if you use the extra grunt regularly. And/or whether you've used the instantaneous MPG computer to figure out the most fuel effective ways of approaching junctions or adjusting speeds in traffic. Rather than zoom up to a T junction and brake/declutch late.

Cheers simon excellent link bit more wiser now !!

is it a case off upping the boost on the petrol / diesel vrs cars or is it totally different from the way the scooby is remaped ?

you mapped any petrol versions off the vrs ??

My mate got his Fabia VRS remapped about 5mths ago costing about £250 using Jabba software. The ECU has to adjust itself and let the map settle so just after the map the clutch was slipping majorly, but eventually settled and is now fine.

He kicks the cars ar$e alot, has done about 80k miles and nothing has gone wrong, see's 120+ atleast once a week, has gave a Mk2 Focus RS a run for it money aswell as an FQ260 and various WRX's.

Instant power and torque and i'd say money well spent, running approx 170bhp 280lb ft with a few other mods.

MPG wise he see's roughly 65mpg on a long run and 50 on the short, wouldn't recommend if just for econemy as the cost of the map would outweigh.

Ive got a ssangyong rexton 2.7, currently 185hp and 250lbs

What could I expect from a straight remap without any other mods? (and still be a reliable, safe daily driven vehicle) ?

Id like to bump up the economy more than power, getting 31.5mpg, would be great if i could creep it up to 40mpg, and maybe break the 200hp and 300lbs torque....

You only notice the extra MPG's if you drive it correctly after the remap. The theory is that because of the extra torque you need less throttle to get to a certain speed. If you put your foot down then the mpg drops as per normal.

So all depends on your driving style

Was the map (for the graph above) a requested 'mild map'? Seems a bit low by what most offer on a so called stage 1 PD130 reamp?

Only asking as my Fabia is going in for some mapping next week and have been told to expect 165/290

Isn't it easy to get massive torque increases though, and usually mappers cap it at 290 to preserve the clutch?

A friend of mine had his remapped and loved it but as others have found the clutch couldn't take it so he put it back to standard again.

290Nm is the safe for clutch limit and what most reampped Furby's run. Course it needs to driven with a little mechanical sympathy, ie no full throttle in 6th at 40mph
