Hi,

Has anyone got any information on fitting a 2.9 engine in a mark 2 RS2000 ? I have been rebuilding the car and wanted to fit a Cossie lump, but they are silly money!!

Mate has offered me a XR4x4 for £200 Got to have it really, haven't I ? Was thinking of using the four wheel drive running gear as well ?? Any views ?

No ideas mate, but a friend of mine user to had a turbo technics XR4x4, f*ckin' quick, his was up to around 300bhp

So sounds like a great plan, shoehorning that into the RS2000.

babber,

The 2.9 was only 145 - 150bhp standard and is hard to tune without spending silly money. Nice midrange torque though.

I had a standard XR4X4, mate had a TT conversion.

If you buy a second hand Turbo Technics converion you need to consider the following.
Turbo Techincs offered a number of different turbo conversions for the 2.9 ranging from a modest single turbo conversion with around 230bhp upto a 320bhp+ twin turbo conversion with highly modified internals.

You need to know which conversion its had and how the drivetrain has been upgraded, the 2.9 should have the MT75 gearbox and running gear, didn't like monster power.

Cheers
Lee

The kits do pop up from time to time however be prepaired for them to go quick, Turbo Techinics only did around 250 2.9 conversions of the various power levels, however that 250 also includes granada's as well as xr4x4's so also look out for them appearing in granada spares.

The cheapest tunning for the 2.9 is your basic exhaust, chip and K&N twin cone air filters this will give you around 10-15bhp.

Alan Jeffery (01752 345880) bought up all the remaining spares from Turbo Technics so he is the best man to ask to see what parts you can still get hold off.

The gearbox has no problems taking the power they only get iffy around the 350+bhp mark and then it is 3rd gear that seems to be the weak one, the power delivery is very smooth there is no real turbo lag, so it is a lot easier on the drivetrain than a cosworth with it is lag then exspolsive action.

If you want a large power 300+bhp then it is going to cost you more than the cosworth route, the advantage of the cosworth engine is that it has been there, done that, got a t-shirt and the pictures to prove it, so there is a basic defined route of how to get x-amount of power and how much is costs.

Mind you if you are lucky you can get hold if a 225bhp kit for around the £300 pound mark, the turbos may be on there way out but getting new ones isn't a problem.

Thanks for all the advise I mean the car was very quick with 110 BHP, so god knows what it would be like with a big BHP lump in it

Does anyone know if it will fit ok ? The engine bay looks just about big enough.

I'm not sure but if you find you can just about squeeze the standard 2.9 into the escort shell then a twinturbo may be out of the question as they just about fit into the sierra, the turbos are very close the the inner wings I'm afraid .

Cool

It may be a daft question, but why not just bang a blower onto the Pinto motor as it is lighter (though admittedly not much) than the V6, and you should be able to get 200+bhp out of it with less expense. Trust me 200 bhp in a MkII escort is plenty!
Either that or put the TT conversion straight onto the XR, mine is a barrel of laughs standard so with a blower on they must be a hoot, if you didn't think it was quick you weren't driving it right, you need to grab them by the scruff of the neck and make them have it!

I have a TurboTechnics converstion on my Pinto RS2000

It knocks out 150bhp. 200bhp would be pushing it a bit I think.

I'd personally go for a Turbo Cossie if I were going to change it.

If you make and modify the sierra inner wings to fit, a bit of a ball ache but well worth it, then every thing else will seem plain sailing plus you will have a little more room to manouvre(toys) under the bonnet.

with all the cost and hassle involved you would be better off using a cossie lump they are available now for about a grand try www.rsoc.net or if you do want turbos of the 2.9 try www.xroc.net/forums my choice would be cosworth or maybe even go vauxhall 16 valve on carbs as they go into escorts very easily. Whats wrong with the xr4x4 to get it that cheap? I have been looking for one but can't find one anymore

Thanks all, nothing really wrong with the XR4x4 other than no MOT and tax. Oh and a wishbone joint will need sorting out!!

Apart from that a bloody good clean and some TLC. Maybe your all right about the Cossie engine, thought it would cost loads more

I agree that the 2.8 is not the way to go. I have seen some homemade budget 2.8 and 3.1(Essex engine) Mk2's before and they are not that reliable and tend to overheat.

I have also seen and 'attempted' spaceframe 4x4 that never rally happend and the only 4x4 Mk2 escorts I have seen used a cut down sierra floor plan and inner wings as already mentioned.

The Cossie pretty much bolts in as a 2wd configuaration and if you use the early loom is apparently 3 to wires to connect.

However, the same is true of the 2.0injection engine and system which could give a lttle more power.

There are other options in the ford range, the RS Turbo engine (say tuned to 185bhp) can be fitted to a RWD box as could a ZETEC/RSTurbo (Known as ZVH) hybrid that could give you a reliable 2000cc and 200bhp.

Outside of ford there are plenty of other cheap options, for example, the old Starion turbo engine (160bhp on standard boost, can be 280 on cossie management). If you used the Starion LSD axle as well, all you'd need is some brackets, wiring, a good fuel tank and a shortened prop.
