2 Door Escort mk1 shell prices.
Hi guys just wondered if anyone knew what they are fetching.
Saw one that i might be able to get my hands on, it's actually running and registered but not sure what engine, don't think it's anything special, maybe only a 1300.

swapping from left to right had drive is easy enough as long as you have the correct dash, steering column, rack, etc as the shells have the right holes on both sides
I will see 'my man' this morning and report back.

It's not something i have paid close attention to, but obviously i know they are starting to become very rare, especially the 2 door, i would imagine that any shell in good or even bad condition is worth a few quid these days hence the question.
I await with baited breath

There is no definitive answer without first seeing the shell/car in the flesh or some decent pictures. it would really help for you to get the chassis number and determine what it actually is.
Here goes, spoke to 'my man' who is a life-long Ford fan, has rallied and rebuilt many Escorts, mostly MK1's and he owns a concourse MK1 RS 2000 and a MK1 Mexico both of which he and his father rebuilt over the years.
The shell, is it just that, no front wings, no bonnet, no doors? has the shell be power coated? if the answer is no then he would not pay more that a grand for it unless it is a proper genuine RS shell. However he would pay that for it if you plan to build a car up from it, be it a RS replica then it could be worth 20K+ as a finished 'concourse' project. if you just plan to buy it and sell it then it is not worth more than a grand or so is what he is saying.
If it has good doors - not filled or rotten and a good bonnet/bootlid then it is worth more. The doors are rare as hens teeth in good condition. you can reskin bad doors as long as the bottom frame is ok but it is a bitch of a job and a specialist job some £500.00 per door to be done properly.
The 2 dr MK1 'cooking' models have different rear arches to the RS models so easily spotted - yes you can cut out the old arch and replace it with the RS arch. same is true of the front wings although this is easily remedied by buying RS front wings
currently the really rare shells are estates and 4 door shells. plenty of escorts produced as 2 dr's where as the others are not so common to the point of rarity thus making them desirable and expensive.
It depends what you want to do with it and how much you want to invest. it might be worth buying it dry storing it and sitting on it for a while...
PM me of you want to talk it though and i will send you my number
I am an ex RS2000 MKII custom owner and have spend more hours than i care to mention working on old 'scort's back in the day including rebuilding a mates MK1 shell to Mexico spec with 'forest' arches

Thanks for asking your mate
Well it's a runner and it's got plates on it which out here in croatia means it passed an mot in the last 12 months which is more stringent here than in the uk, i'm half interested in having it for myself if it can be got at the right money, and wouldn't mind taking it on as a long term project, nothing fancy just drop in a 2.0l pinto and associated running gear, but would emphasise long term.
Pretty sure it's nothing special like an rs, but i a'm reasonably handy with a welder and after a bit of practice can make a decent job of any repairs required.
Think i will go and have a word with the chap and see what he will take for it, but with the type r engine sat next to me in bit's as i type and my new to me blob wagon to mod, i think i might be minus a nut when i get home if the mrs finds out i'm trying to buy another car
Cheers yoof, i love you too

I have owned MK2 Escorts since I was 17 (44 now) I currently have a Modified Concours MK2 RS Mexico. I am also on the Committee of the RS Owners Club.
A 2 door MK2 Shell in rot free condition is worth up to 5k without the doors etc. Even if LHD. Most of these shells end up being converted to Group 4 Rally spec or used to re-shell a rotten RS.
For all the information and advice that you could possibly want, join up to www.rallyesportescorts.co.uk
An extremely active forum with anyone who is anyone within the MK2 scene involved.
Mine.
