OK so which one does everyone think ?
Boot space and number of doors is largely unimportant to me
I've been told that the BMW mpg figures are not really acheivable but are still good, but how close are the VW's to the stated figures ?

Evo tried the Rocco Bluemotion, and said it was very good. Good balance of pace and mpg.
For me the 1 series is just too damn ugly.

Ugliness vs beauty
RWD vs FWD
Its a hard one.
If I were blind I'd go for the one series. VW really need to think about fitting a Haldex unit into the back if 'roc....and a 3.6 vr6 engine in the front

lol I know its a problem ! Of the 2 cars looking at in stock used , the BMW has more bhp (170) and less miles on the clock, scirocco has more miles on the clock and less bhp (140) but has a leather interior .
I've had Audi's and VW's before so I know what I'm getting - never had a BMW.
OK so knowing that - which one ?
Also looked at the bluemotion scirocco but the stop start drives me mad and I just end up turining it off !
Haldex in a scirocco would be good with a 200ish bhp fuel efficient petrol or even a diesel.

When I drove the Scirocco I thought it was dull.
The BMW is a way better drive.
Also, for me, the Scirocco shape is not as impactful as I thought it would be - it has not endured.
Either would be decent cars to own.

I have a 118d and absolutely love the car not the best looking compared to the VW but other than that it's better in every way IMO. I drive it like my scooby and get 42-45 in town with a touch of A roads. But the feel of the drive is v comfortable and effortless but a bit of fun at the same time. My only issue is that it lacks a bit of power but with you going for the 120d you should not have that issue.
Which 1 series have you got? Mine has a mechanical steering pump, the wheel weight is very nice. My old man has a 320d & that has the electric pump, steering weight is a bit hit & miss IMHO.
123D - it's the wife's car - I didn't realise it came with that steering.
It's awful - she seems happy though.
Accelerating through a long bend the lock will suddenly tighten requiring a big wheel adjustment. Stupid - BMW usually have excellent steering.

Something all cars have now. You think its bad - try a new five series! Its even worse!
Add runflats to completely ruin what should be a supple ride (my R32 rides potholes better than the new 5er and GT
).
And there's a plus point for the Scirrocco....normal tyres and a spare. I don't know about yoyu but I don't like the cost of runs flat, nor the ride, the fact they shouldn't be repaired, nor the 150mile range limit when flat, or the lack of a spare should the tyre completly destruct or come off the rim.

Well to spoil the fun I drove both the scirocco and the hatch 120D. Like both and both have advantages and disadvantages. Would be happy owning and using either as an everday car.
In the end thought I decided to go for a change and choose the BMW as I felt it was more fun to drive and dealer was so much better to deal with then the VW dealer.
Pick it up Mon. (if I can find my V5 !)

Seconded. Ran a 120d Sport through the whole of its 3 year warranty life. Brilliant car in all conditions. Went really well and returned perfectly acceptable MPG on most runs. Yet on a M-way run I could see nearly 600 miles on a tank. Went through a few sets of tyres and brake pads but not one single fault or complaint. Best piece of BMW motoring I've had over the years.
Good choice mate. You won't regret it vs the VW.
