Differences between R33 and R34?
#1
Been tempted by the Darkside and I was wondering if theres any sites about the Skyline (i.e. sidc faq equivilent).
I've seen some R33's for 14-18K and I was wondering what I would get for my money

Yep, bit of both...
Either want a cheap car I can afford to spend $$$ on or a dear already modified car
Oh and not white Simon
or with a knackered engine Ian

Polar, Talking about my Knackered engine, it was only when the head was off and it was dyno'd that it was discovered that the block was cracked and had been suffering massive over heating.
The car was driven in that form by a respected tuner and they did not/could not tell of the problems. So basically it's possible to buy a car in that state and not know its fooked until its engine is taken apart or you've bunged it on a rolling road. Both things you can only do when you have actually bought the car and become its bnew owner!
So its not quite as black and white as everybody may think!

Polar, not wanting to bring this argument over here, but... Everyone knows that WHITE is the best colour for an R33!
Ian, what symptoms were you suffering that lead you to discover your cracked block? I guess it's similar to those of a blown head gasket / cracked head? And how do you go about cracking one, too many revs? too much boost? or something obscure such as water in the engine etc.

I just want more power and something thats a little rare.
Can't really afford an R34 and Dont like the R32 so looks like its a R33 GTR vspec looks like the best model 4wd etc

Dizzy sorry to nick ya thread but its mine now ! he he he
polar and gang, the car must have been run at 1.2 bar or MORE! for periods on the stock ceramic R33 turbos! There were traces of oil in the turbines and numerous cracks in the block, compression ratios were fine but the block was pouros.
So any BHP increases would not have been cost effective.
I found out that there was a problem at the last Skyline dyno day (Mini Feb) with boost controller, decat, Ecu and IC it should have got 380 BHP+ but I det'd and only got max 348bhp on aborted run!

Ian, just winding you up mate... Interesting to read about your 1.2 bar boost. I guess you really can't tell what boost the previous owner had run... Out of interest is the labour really a killer on the serious tuning you've just done, I'm reasonably sure about the cost of the parts, but I would of thought that new blocks aren't cheap to fit.
What power are you going for? 500bhp? 550bhp? 600bhp? 650bhp? Spill the beans... Oh and BTW that blue is one of my favourite skyline colours

Mr P Baer,
Its actually easier to fit the whole new engine with the turbos on ect.., as the engine is already out of the car your half way there!
It will most certainbly be 500+ we (GT Art) are still expereimenting with the engine as its the only one in the country (was) and its tolerance levels aare still a mystery. All we know is that its a strenghtened block good for the Japanese endurance series twinned with the Reimax comp turbos!
As far as colour goes , I like the dark met blue to, Im suprised you didn't buy N Welchs car it was a minter (Uk car) and a bargain at £18,500!!
Gone now tho speak to SJD!!!

Dizzy, Ian, PB, etc..
As you guys may be aware one of my best mates ( Rupert ) ownes one of the 'quicker' R33s in the country at the moment..
However this has been a labour for him to get it to this state and has really had to throw money at it...
However this follows the ownership of a lovely Scoob ( MY98 PPP ), a TVR tuscan, Boxster and a previous R33 - which he bought with approx 500bhp, and that was quick..
After witnessing all the progression of these cars I can say that the latest incarnation is awsome, and when it isn't blowing blocks or tearing the gearbox apart it is one of the most amazing cars I have ever had the pleasure to drive and be driven in.
As has been discussed on this an the GTR formum many a time, the R33 ( & 32 / 34 to a certain extent ) IMHO is one of the most highly tunable and most pleasurable cars to be around plus a decent one can be picked up for relatively little money - Go for it but as has been said be careful !!!
Oh and it could end up like this ..
700bhp rock on !
Regards,
Paul

Ian, I didn't buy the car SJD did because of the mileage. I know a few people who have had real problems selling higher mileage skylines (circa 70k), not just depreciation, but simply people don't want to buy at all So rather than buy a 54k mile car and sell it in 18months with 70-80k on it I'd rather buy a 30k mile car and sell it with 45-55k on it. Not tight, but as you've probably seen there is a very sensibly priced 74k R33 on the GTR board, that just hasn't sold
Anyway I have to say without the GTR BBS I am lost now...
