EVO VII - whats it like?
#1
Hi
Ive been planning a car change for a while now and I was considering the EVO VII. Basically, I wanted hear from any other owners who have made the jump? Questions in order of importance (from my perspective anyway)
1. Interior quality? good/bad/OK/rattles (I really hate rattles)??
2. Insurance? what group
3. Fuel consumption? Good/bad/terrible/see attached petrol tanker???
4. Value for money. Is the extra 18hp/sharper handling really worth another £4000 (not excluding the 4500 mile service interval) compared to the STI?
Any help will be appreciated.
Thanks

1. can be as bad if not worse than a classic scoob in build quality
2. fuel consumption is horrendous
3. probably not alot in it for performance especially if the PPP for the STI is due soon?? but supposedly the STI does handle better
4. for an out and out rally car then go for an Evo7, for a car you want to live with on a daily basis and not have to worry about then go for the STI, both will bring smiles to your face and both are rewarding

Hiya
I tried it and loved it (more than the Scoob), but the price, servicing, petrol consumption were just too much. Also I would not have been happy using it as an 'everyday' car and would have needed a little run around as well. But you might be loaded!!!
PS also the back spoiler vibrated like crazy on double carriageway and I could not see a thing. Also a bit too hard for slightly bumpy roads

Des,
Best advice is to go and take a test drive to see if you can live with the Evo as an everyday car. I personally have an Evo 6 and it's been very good as an everyday car (completed 40,000 miles in 18 months with no problems )
Yes, the suspension is hard and a bit uncompromising but you get used to it. Yes the petrol consumption can be low and it has a small petrol tank but if you want good consumption and range then go buy a diesel.
Out of the box, the Evo will be faster and handle better and if you want better performance then they are easily tuneable.
Insurance is Group 20 but is well worth the smile that it puts on your face every time you drive it
As for Shuntys comment about watch tele tonight well????
If you like making your car choices based on someone elses opinion then that's fine. If however like most people you can make up your own mind then test drive them both and do just that.

Shunty,
If I drove like a professional race driver then I might value their opinions....
As it is I drive like myself and can make up my own mind about what I like rather than have someone else tell me what I like.
Most people couldn't live with an Evo as an everyday car. I don't mind it and am quite happy.
Some people prefer a softer suspension and an easier car to drive on a daily basis. I don't therefore I have an Evo and not a scooby.
If I believed everything I listened to on the tele then I would have bought an Evo 7 based upon the review on Driven..... or is that reveiw seriousley flawed because it didn't come out in favour of the Sti and wasn't carried out by a professional race driver????
Personally I don't care which car 'wins' tonight. They are both very different cars and the best way to find out which one is for you is to drive them both and decide and not rely on someone elses opinions.
After all, do you base all of your decision making based on other peoples opinions?
No, didn't think so

Thanks for the info.
Watched last nights 5th Gear and though the EVO won the on track performance by 2 seconds, I suspect that may have been more indicative of 262hp vs 305hp. Something which could obviously be rectified by the £4000 price difference between the two.
On the flip side IMO the EVO is the better looking car, though I accept that neither cars could be described as stunners. I definitely think a test drive is in order....
Again.. thanks for the feedback

One tried it on last night as I left the 50mph zone on the M4 heading out of London. I wasn't trying but as I accelerated upto about 80mph (in 4th) he floored it and sat on my bumper about 1 foot away (tw@t). Anyway, other than that it did move bl00dy quick but I think they look like poorly built airfix models and also think that Imprezas (either old or new) look loads better than Mitsubishi's boring looking beast.
IMHO of course...

I tired one not so long back, it was an impressive car.
For everyday use i couldn't put up with it, but thats just my opinion. Still very rapid, more so than the uk STI but we are talking fractions of a second so not really worth worrying about in normal everyday driving.
Ride was too hard for everyday use, back country B roads would be a real chore where as with the STI you can really give it some and feel reassured at the same time.
I like most am tired of the comparisons between the Evo VI & P1 and the Evo VII and STI. At the end of the day both cars are at the top of the tree all that separates them is your opinion.
Unless you are comparing them to a Vectra in which case Vauxhall Rule
