Focus ST3
After my other thread, I'm actually going to look at a Focus ST3 on Friday as well.
Its a 2007 plate, low mileage, and from the description and images, looks like its in mint condition.
Does anyone have any knowledge on these cars, anyone owned one or had any nightmares with one?
Cheers
Fitz

I had a 2007 ST. Great all round car. If the car is standard there shouldnt really be any real problems. Given a remap and other mods a weak point on the 07 cars is the clutch. Its also a bit thirsty but Im sure you are used to that in a scooby. Depends how you drive it you will probably average 20-24 mpg around town and about 30 on a run. As a general rule the engine should be pretty safe to around 300bhp, but like anything... you mod it your always taking a chance.
Other common problems,
Oil Filter Diaphram
Cracked Seat Base
Alternator Failure
Driveshaft. (But this should have been dealt with as it was a TSB)

Thanks very much, the car is standard.
What kind of performance can i expect from this, in comparison to say a standard classic scooby? I realise on paper it has 10 more bhp and a few more ftlbs of torque, but considering they only get put through the front two tyres I imagine its a bit different in the handling stakes.

No problem.
Never driven a classic so I couldnt really compare. They handle very well for a FWD car as the focus has a good chassis. Obviously off the line it probably wont be as quick being FWD and they are limited in torque in the first 2 gears but once up and running they pull very well. Given a remap which can be had for around £300 with a second hand dreamscience handset they are quick cars. The 5 pot motor sounds very nice too. I would be suprised if you didnt like it but it all depends what you want from a car as its a comfy everyday car not like a classic which I would imagine being a little more raw.

Sounds good, thanks again - appreciate the replies.
For a 2007 plate, ST3 from a garage (30k miles) would you say that £9900 was a fair price? Obviously I'll be doing my best to get that down closer to £9k dead, but we'll have to see.

From a garage that doesnt seem too bad, but like you say I would be looking more towards 9K myself. I traded mine in 14 months ago for £10.5k and that was a white 2007 with 25k on the clock with the Mountune upgrade on (although that doesnt count for a lot in value when you come to sell). I know the ST as with a lot of performance cars people are struggling to sell them.

I have a 2008 ST now and traded in my WRX for one. Never looked back, cracking car! Like said above with a few choice mods you can really unleash the 5 pot growl!
I have remapped mine, filter, sport cat and cat back exhaust and it now runs at 270bhp/396lb torque. No slouch my friend! Se pic and video below!!

58 plater as well, pulls like a train, nice noise from the Volvo T5 and I'll no doubt go for a Dreamscience.
No issues at all, so much refined compared to the Scoob and you can't beat heated leather, bluetooth, heated front window.
Never be as quick but really lovely chassis.

If you can stretch to it I'd be looking for a facelift car, much nicer looking in my opinion. Great cars though although I'm not sure on some of the build quality, plastics are quite cheap in them. I've got a 60 plate zetec s tdci which is quite similar looking

Cheers guys, all helpful.
The only slight nagging concern I have about the car is the residual prices. Say for arguements sake the 2007 plate is bought for £9500 ish from the garage, what sort of price are we talking it will be worth in 3 / 4 years time?
Ideally I'd love the facelift version, but I dont want to spend too much at this point in time.
Loving the video - I have to say I wasnt expecting the car to sound so good. Although I'm sure the remap helped!

Yeah I know that mate. I hear they are just a nightmare to fit. I was just making the example that 4 x £45 for wheels in my eyes is better spend towards power mods.

hold out andsave for a facelift, so much better looking... and as said.. go for WHITE.
Performance it'll be 'like' a scoob... same mpg as what i'm getting in the 330s but Fwd, Ford interior.. nice seats and pratical as a day to day car, blends in with all the other Tesco shopping cars
let us know how you go one. BUT if you can save a bit more for a face lift.
Don't forget a nearly new/pre reg you can get for about £17k at Motorpoint and even some Ford Dealers.

hold out then, all good things come to those who wait,
Keep your eye on the face lifts, you don't know what might come up
£11k gets you a 58plate face lift

we looked at the ST3 BEFORE GOING/COMING BACK TO THE STi 330s.
But the wife already has a FULLY LOADED 2005/54 plate Focus TDCi Ghia, just just felt that having another Focus it would feel we've not really had a change in car.
Also wanted 4 doors and after the winter we've had decided 4wd would be handy too.

I had the day off to go have a look at this car in the morning, clay pigeon shooting this afternoon and a few beers. The upside is I got a lay in beforehand thanks to the car being sold!
