I'm going to buy a Civic Type R, any tips?
I have been wanting one of these for some time now, and after a recent track day in my mates Integra I've finally decided to take the plunge.
I used to own one years ago, but can't remember much about it other than it was a great car, but swapped it in after a few months for my Subaru.
Now I see that there is a face lift model around 04 with quite a high price jump, can anyone tell me if it's worth the extra 2k or so for this? From what I gather it's a set of red front seats and indicators on the door mirrors?
Anything to watch out for from owners/ex owners during the buying process would be very much appreciated.

I currently drive one, its a facelift, 53 plate. Not bad cars, but I need 4 doors, hence looking for a scooby. At approx 6,000 revs vtec kicks in and its quite addictive, to keep it above this (hence regular red line) but fun.

Lol, you wouldn't get four in the one I was in yesterday, well if I was in it anyway.
Also the newer DC5 Tegs are coming on to £10k for a nice one, nearly double what I was considering paying for a Civic. This will be a third car for me so I can't really warrant paying much more than that out.

I dropped 14k with a bank loan on one of these 5 years ago. Seriously overated. Gutless until vtec. Big big waste of money. No torque either. Better buying a newer clio like the 197 much more fun and similar engine etc

I had a 2004 CTR in 2006 / 2007.
Good fun once you get to 6000rpm, but mine was a little lively in the corners, the back end tried to overtake the front on a few occassions.. I got rid after less than a year.

I had a new one in 2003.
Only kept it 12-18 months.
Not overly impressed with it - got very tiresome having to thrash the bollox of it and the steering was very numb.
Cracking gearbox, though.

my son has got a 54 plate and has done about 20 thousand miles in and apart from usual tyres brakes and service its been a great car he has taken it to santa pod a couple of times and the clutch is just starting to slightly slip not bad with nearly 60 thousand on the clock he is really pleased but is looking to change it later in the year for a boxster .....the only mod he has got is an induction kit which helps with the breathing ... i have driven it but its not my cup of tea build quality is good and he gets about 22 to the gallon back and forth to work which is stop start driving on a run steady 70 it does well over 30 to the gallon he would recommend it

I had one and did 50K in it, had 70K on it when I traded it. Nothing went worng in all that time and it was a very good car. If you learn how to drive it you will easily keep up with a standard WRX (loads of people will say otherwise, but they are talking bollocks) and in the dry it is a lot of fun. Traction in the wet was my only real complaint, but you just have to learn to drive round it. Servicing is cheap and it will give you mid thirties mpg on a long run. Thrash it and you will get less, but never into Scooby territory overall. Mine was an 55 plate so had the extras/facelift, but I don't think there is much between the facelift and post facelift model in reality. A great car!

great cars, ive had two EP3's over 6 years, both preface lift though
cracking gearbox and engine, as for people complaining about torque pft they have just been spoilt with big capacity or turbo'd blocks
the noise it makes in vtec specially with just a induction filter on it is awesome imo
as above in the wet is interesting, you just learn not to be stupid on the go pedal heh
the early preface lifts had issues with the alloys finish being abit shoddy, and im sure i remeber something about 2nd or 3rd gear syncros on some
also i remeber a fair few having they're ac condensor getting holed as theres no mesh or anything protecting it
i never had any real issues on the two i had, both driven fairly hard, just the normal on tyres and breaks
fairly good fuel eco and not too bad on tyres..
chipping them with a Kpro etc makes a large difference, but its a few more quid than a scoob remap
http://www.cplracing.co.uk/products....n=details&id=3
and if you really wanna start splashing out a supercharge goes well on them heh
A good forum is www.civictype-r.co.uk
they are a marmite car, but after one test drive i was completely hooked
as with the scoobs the import JDM is the one to go for if you can, few extra like a LSD
as for the facelift compared to the prefacelift, i did test drive a facelift and it seemed abit more urgent but all its really got is a lighter flywheel , projector lights, indicators in wing mirrors , snazzy seats and a new colour (cosmic grey) from memory
there was also a UK 30th anniversay limited edition CTR which had proper recaros and tints in the rear, pretty sure it was preface only

o and as per the dyno chart in CPL racings link, they seemed to artifically put a dip of power in before the cams changed over, i guess to make it more pronouced like the old vtec blocks
the map gets rid of this and a chunky 40bhp increase instead (on a completely std car)

40 Horses with a simple map.
This gets better.
The one I was going to see today was sold, the nice low mileage ones seem a bit few and far between.
