Best 4x4?
The wife currently drives a Lexus RX, we want to change this in the coming months for another 4x4 but which one?
I personally dont want another RX as they never changed the shape of them until recently and they are over our budget.
Would like the idea of 7 seats but its not a big deal if we dont, we both love the RRS but im interested in peoples opinions on the likes of the XC90 and especially the Q7 as the Q7 has all the spec she wants especially the reverse camera, i know these are all big buses and the running costs aint the best but we only have one car between us at the moment so that doesnt really bother us.
Our budget is around 25k so is there anything we should consider or simply just dont go near?
Cheers Ste

Will it see any offroad or towing action?
Of your choices so far, the XC90 would be my preferred option.
I really cannot stand the Q7 or RRS. However I like the proper RR a lot.

why does your wife need a 4x4? unless your doing offroading its a total waste of money. if you are doing offroading then defender all the way, thats the only proper 4x4

no she wont do any offroad, we like the 4x4 as we have room then for the kids, prams, bags and the dog.
Yes Lee i think the Q5 is out of budget as they are still fetching great money, also its a tad to small i think

I have now had a "new model" X5 4.8 for over 2 years and love it.
Tried an RRS for a few days and it did NOTHING as well as the X5 and felt quite agricultural in comparison with poor quality dials and switchgear !! (I do love the look of the RRS though).
Cannot see past the X5 in this type of vehicle. (As Audi Q5 will be well outwith your budget mentioned).

Ste, a Q7 is HUGE! Has Eve sat in one?
Can you get discount at dealerships for LR stuff? if so, why not a real Range Rover rather than the sport?
How about a Cayenne/Touareg? later shape ML's should be in your price bracket
Volvo's - They're boxy but they are good! I'm not that keen on Volvo interiors but then again, I haven't sampled a late one.
Whatever you get, It HAS to be a V8 on LPG

What are the 7 seater X5's like for room? The CXayenne and Touareg are from the same stable as the Q7 except the Toerag has a terrible reputation for major faults.

why oh why are people so defensive about other people buying 4x4 cars
people buy them because they have the best driving postion , the most luxury (normally) and you can put loads of crap in them...

Still believe they are as much a fashion item as Cayenne's X5's Q7's etc.Not the cars fault..its the Queen and that chef
And take note!!! I love them all.Well, maybe the Q7 looks pants
If I could afford it...straightforward lovely unmolested RR.Even then I'd crap myself about it breaking down

Can't quite see the point of a RR Sport aside from its style over a Discovery 3/4, which admittedly is very important to some people. They are both as likely to go wrong yet the Discovery is bigger and cheaper. Go HSE spec in top condition and ignore the mileage.
The driving position in a Discovery / FF Range Rover (and to a lesser extent the RRS) is more commanding, compared to the Q7 and XC90 which are more car-like - this is down to personal preference I guess. The XC90 has stood the test of time well, with no major changes since 2003.
Any 4x4 pre 21st March 2006 will be over £200 cheaper to tax (assuuming it is over 225g/km I think).

Had a 3.0 sd X5 for 4 yrs and 64k now, excellent handling, very comfortable and can get good fuel consumption. Only hassle in 64k has been front wheel bearings which were done under warranty. Tried the XC90 at the time I was looking, very agricultural in comparison, Q7 wasn't bad, terrible understeer and felt about 20 metres in length. The Q7 and the Touareg can get through a set of tyres in under 10k easily.
We've a new X3 on order - almost same size as the old X5, but the 2.0 diesel can get 50 mpg.

Love them....but...look on them as incredibly overpriced vehicles...new and second hand!

Of the big off roaders, only an X5 or proper RR would get my vote. The Q7 is just an oversized step too far and the others are just jacked up estate cars. X5 good on road, RR good off and on. And I love the RR interior too.

Indeed they do kick **** - my wife took her test in a 90 (new at the time) pick up. Think it was a 300Tdi (R reg - 1997). She passed in it!
Looks like a pretty serious one in the pic - is it trialled at all?
I've already sorted the rear bumper/crossmember. Slight corrosion so removed it, Hammerited it then sprayed over with Matt black paint. First time I've sprayed a car but fairly chuffed with the result!
Also Waxoyled it - they sure need looking after but absolutely love it! Something about them just gets under your skin like very few motors do.
That's the car at the dealers we bought it from - it's not that clean now!!

not trialed, but used daily in the highlands of scotland, exactly where you really need a 4x4 in the winter! It also used to tow a range of trailers although my mate also has a disco the same colour for a bit more comfort! Id love a landy but cant justify a third car lol

Sorry to pi55 on the defender worshipping but not keen myself. Have driven through the alps in one before , it struggled with the snow where a previous Nissan Patrol had blasted through, plus there overhyped like Vw vans and such like.
For me , a proper off-roader would be a Patrol or Landcruiser.
Each to there own though, and if the defenders are your thing, great.

Actually, the "daddy" of all off-roaders is the Mercedes G- Wagon. They have a full comliment of diff locks- front, centre, rear and build quality to make any LR product look and feel like a back street bodge.
They are very expensive and rare but a 2001 onwards G-wagon is an absolute beast!!
