Guys
Forgive me for being thick but I`m thinking about getting an M3 convertable.
I will be after something around a 1998 T reg which I understand are 321 bhp.
What is the difference between a "normal" one and the "Evolution".
Thanks in advance for any replies.
Regards
Biff

I'm sure there are lot's I don't know about, but the pre '96 ones were 3.0 286bhp and the Evo's were 3.2 and 321bhp.

EVO Has

3.2 litre 321 bhp engine with Vanos variable valve timing on inlet and exhaust (as opposed to inlet on previous model). lightweight pistons and graphite coated conrods.
Revised suspension
6 speed box with taller final ratio.(optional SMG gearbox)
Revised suspension with geometry and castor angle changes to increase stability.
Quicker steering rack
LSD
Floating brake disks (from the E34 M5)
Revised alloys, front and rear apron, white indicators, high level brake light.

Above taken from EVO isssue 16.

Note that the Vanos system is not wothout problems and is very very expensive to fix. Make sure you purchase an excellent warranty as these cars cost a lot to fix. (My 318is would have cost me £1500 extra over 2 years if not for a warranty and that was just suspension (3 times) and exhaust manifold)

Guys
Thanks for the replys.
Everything is much clearer now but how do I know if there is a problem with the vanos variable valve timing and does anybody know how much it would cost if there was a problem.

About £2k apparently, best to get the £400 PA BMW warranty.

I looked seriously at these and was told to buy the warranty for WHEN not IF it failed

I'd already had a 3.0 M3 and that was great, cost me £300 in servicing over 20k miles!

Cheers,

Phil
